Ah thanks Bazz, I didn't know this. So just out of interest does it state the actual 2016 build date on the 2017 plate?

Yep, model year (MY) and build date are not the same thing. They will start releasing MY17s for most models of cars from about August or September 2016, but the build date will still be 2016 not 2017. Subaru have been known to release a MY17 as early as July the previous year. It creates issues when you are trying to compare which model you are buying or selling. If you are interested in a particular model, the MY is more important. If you want to be able to say "mines a 17 build not a 16", then you should wait for January. That said, you'd get a December 2016 build in the January run-out for $1-2k less (or with free accessories) and the car would be identical.

something to consider with the amount off fuel left in the tank at empty is the possibility of fuel temperature. the series7 Hilux had a fuel cooler under the passenger side footwell to cool the fuel returning to the tank, from the temps from pressurising the fuel to 23000 psi. The series 8 has new type injectors but no fuel cooler. By leaving extra fuel in the tank the fuel will cool. Just a thought as there is no sign of a fix as yet.

the 1KD does have a fuel cooler , attached to the side of the commorail swarf filter . dont know how effective it is though.
there were some diagrams on the Toyota paid side which showed how it it all works

I was out at SCI FLEET Toyota Albion Queensland. Friendly, helpful staff. Got talking about the fuel guage issue. They are doing a fix. Were they remove the fuel tank and bend the sender rod, so it gives a more accurate reading. Fuel light comes on with 12 litres rather than 25 litres. He said they are having good results. Fix takes about 3 hours.

Hi JHSR5,
We also moved from NSW to QLD a few years ago. Welcome to QLD and go the BLUES!!! (Better watch that, I have moderators all over me at the moment!)
I just picked up a SR with only 853km on it and I do about 190km's a day going to Brisbane and back to the Gold Coast
So I was astonished at the fuel gauge telling me it was less than an eight of a tank (i.e. 10 litres left), but only had to fill 52 litres to fill the 80 litre tank (i.e. the tank was actually 35% full not 12.5% full)
I will ask about this fix at next service. Did they say anything about a software fix or is this hardware fix in bending the sendor rod the official fix?
Cheers
Les

I got word today from my seller that there indeed is an update out for the automatic. Not sure if it's for the fuel problem though. Will call tomorrow to check what it's for.

Hey redlineg,
Not sure if it is the offical fix. I took my hilux in today for 10k service today. Get it back tomorrow. They mentioned a new sender unit install when it dropped it off. I will post results tomorrow after service and replacement sender unit. Currently fuel range is between 700-750km/100. Im expecting range to read more like 900-950km/100.

The update i got word if is called (in sweden at least) CP-0070T-0016. However it's NOT for the fuel problem, it fixes the gear shifting between gear 2-3, 3-4. I spoke to the tech boss at Toyota Uppsala and he said the car was like a totally different car after the update and he drives them himself for several years.

JHSR5,

I have the same issue as you, range says 700-750km, but when driving and you toggle through the display to avertage l/100km, I am averaging 8.8L per 100km which would give me a range of 909km when full. Even if you take out the last 50km for warning, the range would then be 859km.
For the record I have manual transmission
It will be interesting to see what they come up with
Cheers

I thought they already fixed this? I had my auto transmission updated in November and it fixed the 3rd-4th shoddy gear change when cold. Gear changes are as smooth as silk now.

I was advised yesterday after my service (mentioned the fuel sender calibration issue beforehand) that Toyota is developing a fix for this which is expected to be a replacement fuel sensor arm. Could be a number of months.

The dealer offered to drop the tank and modify the arm themselves which is fantastic service in my opinion. I said it was just a nuisance, not a real problem so no need to go to all of the effort to drop the tank if there is an official fix expected in a few months.

I was advised today that Toyota still working on fuel tank sender?? My Sci fleet did say they can do a temp fix where they bend the send slightly, got down to 30k till empty today would normally only put in around 60lt but this time it took 71lt so at least that is a bit more accurate. Still have a bout a 70 k buffer till empty, better than 200k.

This fuel thing has been driving me mad. It's been ok for normal week around town because I regularly top up. But late last year I did a massive Simpson trip covering 7,000Km in all. I carried an extra 6 jerry's to give me a 200Ltr total fuel load and good range. This didn't stop my mates in their big 79's with duel tanks and close on 300Ltrs taking the rise because I was constantly having to stop to top up my little 80Ltr thimble (why does the Lux only have an 80Ltr tank anyhow? - madness). The fuel reading regularly said I was close to empty and then I'd struggle to get a couple of jerry's in. I was actually only consuming about 45-50Ltrs between top-ups but didn't want to chance the possibility of one occasion when the reading might have been right.
I've decided not to wait for a Toyota fix anytime soon (bend the sender arm/software update (if/when it comes) etc.) and am saving my pennies for to fit a LongRanger tank to give me the range between top-ups .....that will really bugger the fuel reading :-)
