I need to get my fuel tank checked.Ran my 2016 sr5 as long as I dare with the fuel light on.
Filled up with fuel and the tank only took 62 litres.

It's back in for the first service paid service next week.

In fact mt fuel light comes on when I get to 1/4 tank.

Is there anything wrong with the Hilux computer's firmware? I think not.
Firmware is the permanent software programmed into a read-only memory of a processor chip.
In the hilux the fuel computing is done by the computer but (correct me if I'm wrong) the fuel measuring instruments and sensors are all analog.
Therefore I don't think there is a "fuel gauge firmware" issue.
The problem with the fuel reading in the hilux has everything to do with the actual fuel gauging instruments.

My car does the same , the most I have been able to get in tank is about 67L ,that's fuel light on for 2 days and distance left reading 0 for a little bit and driven about 710k on the tank of diesel
Mine is in now at Toyota for a service 10,000k. I notified Toyota about the consistent 65-67L into the tank when enpty

Just filled mine up when the low fuel light came on, the computer said i had 35km left of fuel in range. Filled it up to the "brim".. 60 liters and i have had my ecu updated.

Not sure if it is the offical fix. I took my hilux in today for 10k service today. Get it back tomorrow. They mentioned a new sender unit install when it dropped it off. I will post results tomorrow after service and replacement sender unit. Currently fuel range is between 700-750km/100. Im expecting range to read more like 900-950km/100.

JHSR5,

I have the same issue as you, range says 700-750km, but when driving and you toggle through the display to avertage l/100km, I am averaging 8.8L per 100km which would give me a range of 909km when full. Even if you take out the last 50km for warning, the range would then be 859km.
For the record I have manual transmission
It will be interesting to see what they come up with
Cheers

Just an update.
On my first service Toyota acknowledged there is an issue and fault (after looking at fuel receipts and photos of DTE!) and have agreed to fix it. They immediately said they need to remove the fuel tank and bend the sensor rod etc so are all over this. They said next service (now due in about 4 weeks) to give them plenty of notice as it is a full day job and need to prepare. So don't expect same day service with short notice via online booking. Probably pays to ring them in advance.
So will let you know how we go.
Maybe this is the perfect opportunity to reverse the front rear suspension bolt to facilitate a suspension lift?
Cheers

My 10,000k service I mentioned the fuel gauge issue ,DTE on 0 and that it had been on 0 for two days and I still I only put 68L of diesel back in the tank to full.
I was told by Toyota ,that when built Toyota have the senders set this way so people don't run the tank dry and that there is no fix.

Since owning my hilux from November 2016 I have never put anymore than 69L of diesel back in the tank to fill from empty.

My 2017 hilux is much the same, not getting what I expected out of 80ltrs of fuel. Going by the gauge I can't even make it to Melbourne from Adelaide.
My Subaru Outback did the trip and back to Ballarat on 65ltrs, not good for those Friday night drives for the footy when servos are closed at 2am on a Saturday morning.

I did mention it when dropped the hilux off for 1000km inspection and they did say a lot of complaints have surfaced about it.
They assured me a fix for it will be available at my 10k service late in the year

I've been monitoring the wife's rav4 and the fuel lamp also comes on with 20L left in the tank. As long as I know there's 20L left, the trip computer range doesn't really bother me.

But seems to be a toyota thing.

Yep the Wife's Prado was the same, never really noticed it so much as the capacity was huge 150ltrs so didn't really care if we couldn't use the last 20. I think the annoying thing for everyone on the Hilux is that after 5-600 km's its looking for a refuel which is a bit painful in the country and especially when towing as the range drops back when your using nearly 20lp/h towing 3t.
My Hilux (2.8D)uses 18-20 lp/h towing 3.2t and my Silverado that I used to have with the 6.6L Duramax with triple the torque used 20lp/h towing the same boat. Not to mention the Silverado also weighed another 1.5t on its own !!

Tank Capacity

Postby NebulaLux5 on Thu, 11 May 2017 5:08 +0000

Hey guys I'm a new member here. I've already seen a thread dealing with this issue but that was nearly a year ago and wanted to know if anything has been done by Toyota about it. My SR5 HiLux (2017 model) has an 80L capacity and I fill it up when it hits around 15-30kms left in the tank. When I fill up at the servo I can only get 60-68L of diesel in the tank. Has Toyota fixed this issue since the last thread of this or is this still an issue? Cheers guys :D

Hey, Yes Toyota has a fix for this, but you have to ask for it at your next service.

I just had mine fixed, it's great. Fuel light only comes on at 50km to empty. And the gauge is more accurate as well - as in a reduced reserve they don't tell you about.

I seriously thought I was going crazy... trip running down to 0~20Km until empty and only getting 58~61L max back into the tank I just thought it was a 60L tank and the extra was in the lines! - I think my ute (SR) was a march 2017 build.

If i know they can fix it i'll be sure to get them to do it, seems like i've got and extra 150~200km to go if its a 80L tank...

Hi all, great forum!

10 months with my SR5 dual cab and same issues as you have all listed above - I have sent Toyota an email and got the following reply - thought you might be interested...I'd encourage everyone who's on here to send Toyota an email

Keep the pressure on!

From Toyota....

Thank you for your recent email received by the Toyota Guest Experience Centre dated 8th June 2017 regarding the fuel tank and gauge in your 2016 HiLux SR5.

The fuel gauge is designed to have a 'mistake proofing' margin or 'reserve', to help prevent a mistake being made leading to the vehicle running out of fuel. This is not a manufacturing defect and performing as its design intent.

When the warning light is displayed, there will still be fuel remaining in the tank, which could be in excess of 10L.

Furthermore, we recommend monitoring your vehicle's driving range (cruising range) which displays the estimated maximum distance that can be driven with the quantity of fuel remaining. This distance is computed based on your average fuel consumption. As a result, the actual distance that can be driven may differ from that displayed. Fuel consumption will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories.

We acknowledge and are aware of your feedback regarding the fuel gauge and can advise Toyota Australia are motoring this characteristic of the vehicle.

Thank you once again for your feedback and for contacting Toyota and allowing us the opportunity to respond.

Regards,

Angelique

They've basically said nothing in that email. Why advertise an 80 litre tank and specify this in the manual, when EVERYBODY's light and gauge read empty at ~60 litres. It was never an issue in the older model, when the light came on you had ~5 litres to go - seems reasonable to expect the same :)
