Probably a silly question but anyway ..... here we go:

Why are rear shock absorbers on Hilux mounted one at the rear of the axle (left one) and the right hand side one at the front of the rear axle?

Probably so they can make just 1 part instead of 2.

It assists in reducing the severity of axle tramp under heavy acceleration or deceleration by helping to control axle wind-up.
It provides some measure of controlling the torque reaction in the rear axle.

It's not that it's NOT necessary, it's just that some do it and some don't. Back when beam axles were the norm it was quite common.
