Heavy springs light load

Heavy springs light load

Postby KUN26R on Fri, 15 Jun 2018 4:43 +0000

Hi all, has anyone fitted heavy springs but don’t regularly carry the rated load?
After fitting a dobinsons 300kg kit I drove it with no load, it was surprisingly ok. I was thinking about putting their 580kg kit in to cope with my camp canopy, but it would need to carry 300-350kg for work.
Is anyone in a situation like this? How does it work out? Are you happy with it or is it just too rough?
Cheers Scott.

Mate I have a GVM upgrade with 600kg springs and I reckon it’s fine. I am running a long range fuel tank, heavy duty allow tray, an 80l Engel with doip slide and a small toolbox in the back for day to day use and it’s fine. It is better under load of cause. It’ll be firmer, but it won’t rattle your teeth out if that’s what you are worried about. Shockies are BP51s however before when I was running nitros it was fine. I only notice it if I forgot to let the air down in the air bags after unloading!

Cheers

Mainly having too rough of a ride for work use is my main concern. I was quite surprised how good the ride was empty with the 300kg springs.
I’m going to look at increasing it to 580kg and see how it goes.
Is it possible to simply add an extra leaf to the existing set to increase the load carrying or will I need to replace them as complete units?

I don’t see a problem with an extra leaf mate.

Comes down to leaf pack design and shock choice as much as anything.
Most spring manufacturers have for lack of a better way to put it. A 2 stage spring.
First stage is comfort while second is the load bearing. I’m often on the load bearing camping etc. if you have constant 300 and 200-250 in there most the time as a minimum, you likely are already in the tougher part of the spring.
I have constant 3 hundreds and would quite honestly only carry 150-200 max as a daily drive. With no problems.
Only time I have noticed a significant issue was on top mine specked cruiser utes.
Talking 800kg constant. They buck like a mule unloaded.
As long as you have 200-300 in there minimum all the time your laughing.
And as to shocks if you leave them as the 300kg set up (as most companies go to a more restricted valving on higher loads) the shocks won’t resist movement as much as if you were to boost up to top specs.

So shouldn’t have a problem. Might be the slightest bit harder initially but that just means you know the roads not perfect.
