Hilux suspension

Morning all, I have finally gotten around to getting my suspension sorted out, made some phone calls and am keen to get it done. Problem is that I carry around 300-350kg every day and when we go camping the canopy loaded is around 500-550kg.
I’m quite keen on the dobinsons kit (suits my budget) but their rear springs are 250-300 or you go up to a 580kg.
I’d prefer around 400 constant.
Ironman and EFS do a 400 constant, has anyone mixed brands with good results? (Ironman leafs with dobinsons the rest?)
Maybe I’m better off to go with Ironman or EFS kit?

People mix and match all of the time - no issues there... non you'll notice anyway. I do note there was an issue here recently of a HD spring bending a stock strut.

Obviously someone trying to sell you a package will have a different view... probably suggesting they are perfectly matched or some other BS.

I have OME 400kg constant load in the rear of mine they are going great I have canopy, loaded draws, fridge, long range tank etc

Cheers guys, had a chat to the mob that are going to fit it and they were happy for me to supply my own springs and put the rest of their gear on.
Spitfia, do you know how much weight you carry on your 400kg springs? Is is below or over 400kg or bang on? Sounds like your set up is pretty sorted.
I had OME on my previous hilux and wasn’t too impressed.

I recon all up id be a bit over 300kg I went with the 400kg for when I am fully loaded with camping gear and so when I have a trailer on board I don't drag my arse

I’m getting the 300kg dobinsons fitted now, I’m not sure if they will be heavy enough. I’m in the same boat as you, I’d be around 350ish, was keen on around 400kg springs but ended up settling on 300. Figured I can change over the springs in the rear fairly easy if they don’t cut it?
I’m having some airbags fitted as well and I didn’t want to rely on them too much.

I've got the 300kg dobinsons in the rear of mine. Not sure what weight I'm carrying around, but i have a set of titan draws (pretty full with stuff), compressor setup, oven, tools & canopy in/on the back. Rides nicer than standard springs.
Currently towing a camper trailer with more stuff in the tub & it's only slightly bum down. I'm happy with that.
Be keen to know if your car gets a lean to the left after the springs are fitted. Mine has a noticeable lean, roughly 20mm difference with a full tank.

I’m really happy with the result. It rides so much better than standard. With my day to day load it’s spot on, I drove it on the weekend with no load at all and only the ally tray and it still drove well, it was definitely a rougher ride but it was ok.
The not so good was with the camper canopy on, I had to put around 25 psi in the air bags, i wasn’t too keen on putting much more than that in, it still sat quite low in the rear.
Not really sure what to do from here? May need to try heavier springs to see if it’s suitable with my day today load??

Yeah, I got the same lean to the left. Long rang tank, big Engel and drop slide all on the same side tho...

Mine doesn’t have a noticeable lean, it appears quite level. 20mm, there could be a lot of factors. How evenly is it loaded?

Mine has a lean to the left even when the tank is very low & everything else is evenly loaded.

I am using the topic to give me opinions on two sets of suspensions:

OME BP-51's or Terrain Tamer Pro version. I like the the TT's ease of configuration for compression (expecting to use it due to the fact our local trails are quite gnarly while there is lots of tarmac to them). I also like the concept for progressive springs of Terrain Tamer.

BP-51 is a little more expensive, harder to configure on the trail.

I believe that both sets are rebuildable.

Any comments?

For one the bp51 don't need to be messed with just for offroading. Once you have them set to the way you like them they will handle any terrain you thro at them! That's the whole idea of a bypass shock, the valving changes throughout the stroke of the shock. Progressive rate springs don't do much if the valving of the shock doesn't match.They only time you really need to play with the bp51 is if you are carrying more load and you want to slow the rebound a little and stiffen the compression. Most of the time this isn't necessary tho. As far as I know terrain tamer don't make a bypass shock so there is no comparison.

So TOYZX, do the bp51 have low and high speed dampening adjustments like high end fox and kings? Also is the shock piston externally adjustable or are all the adjustments done on the reservoir?

When I get my tax return I am investing in a set of DMS struts and shocks for my n80. I have full approval from the minister of finance. :) I don't want to by Chinese stuff. Be nice to get the same performance shock wise as I get with the White Power on the back of my 990adv r. :?:

I'd encourage you to do your research on the brand you mention. Might be worth your while going with other Aus based manufacturers that offer support when something goes wrong.

Nah no other adjustment. Compression and rebound adjustment is done on the body of the shock, changing the shock through it's whole stroke.
