Advise on suspension upgrade

Postby matan on Fri, 20 Apr 2018 9:12 +0000

I have just put a slide on camper on my 2005 sr 5 extra cab flat bed ute. It actually drives ok but the rear leaf springs are flat and the tray drops about 12 cm under the load. Total weight 2580 kg. There is already a lot of weight on the ute. Steel bull bar , panniers, and a full length under tray drawer. What do i need to keep the tray from dropping so much. Heavy duty springs 200- 600 kg. Or airbags or sumo bags. What have you guys fitted that works. I also need to tow a 16 ft centre console boat. Help.

I don't think you can do what you are asking, the car is illegal and won't be covered by Insurance if you have an accident. Without even thinking about the safe limits of the vehicle.

My figures show the GVW of an Xtra Cab SR5 as 2710kg. You are at 2580kg before you add towball weight or people or anything else. So you have only 130kg spare for:

You.
Passenger(s).
Luggage.
Towball load of the boat (will be at least 150kg).
Fuel if your tank wasn't full when you weighed it.
Whatever else you'd be carrying.

Off the 2006-2010 Hilux sales brochure. The highest GVW of any of these is 2835kg for a diesel SR cab-chassis. The Xtra cab 4x4 SR lists as 2710kg. That figure is backed up here (under dimensions tab):

https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/details ... TM-277876/

Unless it is a rear wheel drive, which has a GVW of 2875kg:

I think somewhere around 2710kgs sounds correct. Redbook will have the info.

Upgrade your springs as airbags aren't worth a cracked chassis.
I might be wrong.
