How high is too high before diff drop, UCA's etc

Postby deeman111 on Sun, 18 Feb 2018 11:04 +0000

Hi guys/girls

Now dont judge me straight away, but ive got a Fortuner. Just got it lifted at TJM with there 50mm kit. The car looks great and feels amazing so far, but it is sitting high. by their measurements its been raised 70mm over stock, as my std springs were sagging like an old guys nutsack, due to the bullbar, winch, battery system etc it has gone 100mm from where it used to sit.

After having a look at the CV shafts they are obviously taking a big of a angle now from the lift. So when is the angle too much and you need to either diff drop, or drop the suspension height? And please excuse my inexperience, but what actually happens if you run the bigger angles? do the shafts pop out or does it prematurely wear components?? Nothing was said when it was aligned about suspension angles so im unsure if UCA's are needed for that kind of lift too?

Any help will be awesome as i have to go back at 1000km for an inspection, so if im not happy they will change things then.

Thanks!

P.S. Chances are it might settle 10mm or so, but im just working out solutions if it doesnt.

Gday Toyz

So you wouldn’t bother with UCAs for a 2 inch lift?

Nah mate not usually needed unless you have trouble with getting the alignment right. Am yet to see one not align properly, unless the alignment guy useless and not having a go!

X2 on what TOYZX said. Don't waste your cash on UCAs with a 2in lift.
I might be wrong.

Cheers men

Do you guys rate EFS kit? Generally a daily driver but starting to be a weekly trail basher. Although still a novice but want to get to get right into it!

Or should I fork out for Fox shocks?

Depends on how much bling you want and how deep your pockets are. The EFS are fine and while the Fox kit has adjustable features, most people only adjust them once or twice and then never again.

If you go Fox shocks, you might need UCA's purely for coil clearance, due to the larger shock body. It doesn't always happen, but it's common for the UCA to contact the coil on full droop with the big shocks, and can sometimes catch under a coil wind, binding the suspension. EFS would be fine for your current use, only extended rough road driving like touring or several day off-road expeditions would really test them, where they may overheat and fade. There are some other middle ground solutions, like Profender or Outback Armour, or Drivetech, etc.
