Air bags

Air bags

Postby KUN26R on Wed, 07 Jun 2017 6:29 +0000

Hey guys, has anyone installed airbags to their hilux with stock suspension? I've just installed a kit, it is supposed to suit standard height to 50mm lift.
I had to lift the ute with a jack to get the bags in, when I dropped it down the bags (with out any air in them) pretty well just bottomed out. There is virtually no movement in the suspension. I put 15psi in there to lift it slightly but it feels as though the bags are taking most of the weight. It has been suggested that I install single bellows bags (instead of the twin)
I always carry approx 200-250kg for work. I also install an ally canopy for camping which would weigh approx 500-600kg
I'm just keen to hear from anyone else that has installed bags to stock suspension.
I will upgrade my suspension soon but looking for a bit of assistance in the short term.
Cheers.

Get your suspension done man!! Please! If you expect bags to carry that all the time you'll end up with a cracked chassis!

As above, you should definitely have +250kg or +300kg leaves fitted with that constant load. Then use the bags to assist when the canopy is on.

Yeah, that is the plan. I'm well aware of the dangers, I think that caused my issue. I put 25psi in them this arvo and it improved the ride big time.
I started off with no air in them, then went to 12psi(not wanting to over do it) and it was bottoming on the bag mounts.
I'll prob try and fast forward the suspension upgrade I think.

Do these airbags offer any benefit to aftermarket suspension?

I know with the correct leaf packs they aren't needed, just curious.

The weight on my ute changes, up to around 300kg in difference. With airbags I can have suspension to suit my day to day load, and use the airbags to increase load carrying when required.
I could install constant 500kg leaves for worse case, but it would snap my spine while it was lightly loaded. (200kg)
Everyone has different circumstances though.

i am also in the same situation as my rear has the canopy, which has caused my rear to sag i would like 2inch lift with constant load leafs maybe 300kg.

@kun26r howd you go??

I haven't done anything about it yet devils. I have called about pricing and enquired about a few details.
I will prob do something later in the year. I will go with 300kg in the rear. I'll see how it goes with that, they can add a leaf if it needs more later on. Maybe not needing the airbags but I'll see how that one goes as well.
