Squeak in new strut

Squeak in new strut

Postby Red80 on Fri, 28 Apr 2017 6:37 +0000

I've had an efs suspension setup in for a month or so and a couple of thousand Kim's. after a couple of off road trips to the beach and a dusty weekend there is a slight chirp on hard bumps only. I've washed out the strut thinking it was some dust but after a day or so it comes back. Everything is tight and I'm thinking it may be dust on the rod or something but normal driving it is quite, only squeaks over pot holes etc.

Also the upper part of the shock (cover protecting the rod) is very close to the coil and looks like just touching the coil on one side, not too concerned as I think the coil would have a slight arc under compression?

Any ideas on other things to check?

Leaf springs. Jack up the chassis so the leaves separate and give it a good it with the high pressure cleaner.

It sounds like there is dirt, sand, or dust rubbing inbetween the leaves. Had the same issue a few weeks back.

Not too sure about the second part of your post about thw coil. Use the search function at the top of the screen, no doubt you'll find an answer.

Check the lower bush on the strut hasn't failed prematurely and is allowing the bottom of the strut to rub on the lower control arm. Check the lower bolt is tight. Check the upper nut on the strut is tight.

Not the leaves although they are squeaking too.
I've checked all the bolts and they are tight, I'm starting to think it may be the front bumper as it only does it on a sharp bump.

Front grill/headlights could could have come a bit loose over the bumps. Is the bonnet clip thing secure? My truck had a rattle from the front and I found it was the bonnet secure.

I think it is the top of the strut. What should I be looking for?

Probably worn bushes in the top hat. Bit hard to check without pulling the strut out.

Will be pissed if so. Have only done a couple thousand klms
Definitely sounds like a rubber squeak but only on sharp bumps

Did they replace them when they did the struts?? Some reuse the factory rubber ones and they cant handle the force of heavier springs. We replace them with urethane ones.

I've got the same sharp squeak at the top of my drivers strut. It's definetely a worn bush. Theres a thread on here regarding it. The toyota design for the strut top assembly isn't very good and I'm pretty sure theres an aftermarket fix for it.

Like I said, we replace them with urethane ones then they don't seem to give trouble. My rubber ones were fine till I did my lift then they were stuffed in under 5k.

They used the efs strut tops...I assume. Wasn't the factory ones that came with the car because I bought them as an assembled strut
They are fairly light springs only up to 60kg.

Pretty disappointed after a couple of thousand Kim's. I'll pull the top nut and bush off on the weekend and see if I can see any wear in the top hat

Didn't know about the urethane tops, might have to look at that

The strut rod seems to sit central, some of the pics I've seen must have been flogged out for a while as they've chopped right out to the metal housing.

Question.
I understand there is two bushes in the top hat, Is the stepped bush supposed to be above or below the top hat?
I pulled the top nut off and the stepped bush is on top, I thought it should have been under the top hat?

Probably just going to replace them with nolathane bushes and hopefully that shuts the squeak up.

Different brands have the step in different places. Makes no difference as long as it all been seated properly during assembly. Were they worn thru?? For them to squeak the shaft is usually touching the side of the top hat.

Not worn right through just obviously a lot more pressure on the inboard side of the shock pin. Not touching the top hat yet.
It's just odd they only squeak on a quick bump, you can rock it as hard as you like and no squeak.

Heading to Birdsville later in the year so think I'll just get a set of urethane bushes for peace of mind

I'm fitting EFS elite shocks ATM and found the upper control arm to be resting on the coil on full droop ....im fitting extended ball joints this afternoon. As for the stepped bush that EFS use, I figured I would fit on the top also as it meant the spring would be slightly less compressed with less preload that the other way around.

Mine is a fair way off the coil, did you use a spacer as well?

Nope, just the replacement shocks and springs. It would be ok with weight on it but with the wheels off the ground the upper control arms hit the coils.
The extended ball joints that were supplied and fitted to my UCA's today turned out to be wrong too....must be for 05-15 hilux's only....pretty annoyed!

Ended up ripping them out and replacing them with some bilsteins
Turns out the struts supplied were the incorrect match to the coils and some sort of locator at the top of the strut had failed.
