What size wheels to get or stick to 18s

Just wondering what size wheels most people run? I want to do some touring/4wding and am looking at the maxxis and bfg all terrains. Can’t split the two at the moment. Just wondering if it’s worthwhile getting some 16 or 17” steel wheels and getting tyres to suit those or just stick with the 18s. Is there much of an advantage in going the smaller wheel/bigger sidewall tyre?
