FJ Cruiser wheels

Postby dazza609 on Mon, 11 Mar 2019 10:43 +0000

Hi,

Picked up a set of 5 FJ cruiser wheels, they have 275/65 17 tyres on them with a bit of life still in them, so I thought I would put them on.

At first just had a little rubbing on drivers side mud flap when turning, removed it for now, but when turning right into a driveway at a bit of speed tgey still rub. Have been told that a wheel alignment were they could bring them forward might be ok.

What have others found?

Are they 17x7.5” with the same offset as 2012-2015 SR5 17x7.5”? Pretty sure these are +30mm offset. The FJ Cruiser may be deeper dish though like +15mm offset.

What offset are the 18” 2016 onwards SR5? I thought these were +30mm as well, and 18x7.5 with 265/60/18 meaning they are basically the same size as a 2012-15 17x7.5 with 265/65/17. Meaning your problem is with the 275 tyre. Use a 265/65/17 and should be fine as long as it isn’t the lesser backspace of FJ cruiser wheels causing the problem.

I have them with 265/70/17 bfg mt and 2inch lift with no problems. I think they can move things forward with a wheel alignment but not sure how much
They have 15mm offset

It will be that extra 15mm outwards each side that is causing your problem. Be careful of legality too as a change from 30P to 15P means you have increased your wheel track by 30mm, and in most States I think 25mm is your maximum allowed before you are no longer roadworthy and probably void warranty and Insurance if Toyota or your Insurer(s) decided to argue the point.

They are 17x7.5 with a 15p offset, got a tray on so thought they would be good to sit further out for that and they look better then what was on it. Is a 2017 SR twin cab.
Was hoping to keep using the 275/65 as the spare has a brand new tyre on it.

How do people go running 0 offset wheels? Have seen a few hiluxes with that offset.

They are not legal if you increase the track by more than 25mm so that means max of 17.5P.

In QLD you can increase the track width by 50mm on 4WD vehicles, so up to +5 offset would be legal.

I used aftermarket adjustable UCAs to get a perfect wheel alignment on mine and eliminate the scrubbing. 2014 with 2 inch lift and 265/70/17 BFG KO2s.

Does QLD not follow the NCOP?

I just saw the 2015 update NCOP and it does say for type MC vehicles that yes you can increase track by up to 50mm, but only if they fit under the guards or flares in the straight ahead position and wheel/tyre does not contact anywhere under any operating conditions fully loaded.

So yes, that would in theory allow offsets as low as 5P to be used is the other criteria is met including if the vehicle is actually category MC (should be on compliance plate). Ford Territory aren’t apparently.

It’s 50mm for MC as well as NB and NA vehicles. Probably relevant considering the hilux sits in NA category, this is a hilux forum, and the thread is about a hilux. I’m sure the Ford Territory is relevant somehow though.

Oh, and it’s been 50mm since 2011.

True it is for all three ADR categories but the same criteria apply. I was reading the 2015 version hence my reference of it.
Territory is relevant as it can be a 4x4 but it doesn’t fit into any of those categories, so is treated as a passenger car. Just pointing out not all “off-road” or 4x4 vehicles have this luxury.
I actually wonder why they allowed the 50mm track change to certain off-road vehicles but don’t allow it for other vehicles that have far tougher bearings, axles etc. Example Holden or Falcon 1-tonners. These will handle a track change as well as a Hilux or at least a Sierra or the like.
