Report FJ Cruiser Rims fitted to 2018 SR

Hey all,
I was reading these threads in my search for a set of new wheels. I ended up looking for second hand FJ, GU patrol and 150 series Prado wheels. I got a decent deal on five FJ Cruiser rims with the OE tyres so i put em on today.
So the stock FJ wheels are 17x7.5 inch, with an offset of 15. The FJ tyres are 265/70/17. This is compared to the SR OE wheels with 17x7.5, et30 and 265/65/17 tyres.
Some of the specs are attached, calculated from wheel-size.com. (very handy resource). Total diameter is 803mm, 31.6 inches.
My SR is almost new with 2000km. Its got stock suspension with a front bar and winch.
Firstly, the FJ rims fit fine. They look great, some photos to come. They do scrub in normal driving when turning. Im guessing its the mud guard area behind the front wheels. So there is some work to be done there.
The offset is different which changes the scrub radius. The internet tells me that it should exhibit greater steering force, tramlining and bump steer. There was no noticeable change around town and highways. So the 14mm change in scrub radius doesnt seem to make a difference.
Anyhow thats after about 100km of driving. I'll get medieval with my mudguards to fix the scrubbing and maybe a wheel alignment and extra castor.
Hope that's of use to someone.ImageImage

The assumption that the OE tyres make the speedo correct is false. Just about all cars since 2006-ish have the speedo reading high by about 5-10%. You'll find the next size tyre up goes close to fixing it. My 2011 SR5 had 255/70/15 and I changed to 265/65/17 and the speedo is just about spot on now.

If you find some 120 'cruiser rims, 2011 SR5 diesel, 2012-15 SR5 or probably 150 'cruiser rims which are all positive 30 that even with the taller tyres you should have no scrubbing or if you do it won't be as bad as with the positive 15.

Keep in mind to your car is possibly now also technically illegal and an accident may see you with no insurance, as you have increased your track width by 30mm. Some States 25mm maximum is allowed. I'd check this in your State.

In NSW total track increase is 25mm so this is 5mm over. The speedo is now accurate within 1km/hr compared to GPS.

I though the offset change would help the scrubbing problem, not make it worse

5mm over is still over, is not compliant thus you may have insurance issues if you have a serious accident. You've found the same as me, going up a tyre size gets you very close to correct.

Moving the tyres out further is what creates the scrubbing problem, it pushes the tyre out and it is the outside of the tyre that scrubs not the inside.

Scrubbing fixed! So the rubbing area was the raised section of the mudflap. It scrubs the front edge of the wheel. In the end i took off the muflaps. Then moved the metal back with pliers and a hammer. Pretty easy to do, very thin metal. I decided to install some rubber sheets with some aluminium strip as new mudguards.
Used one of the existing holes and drilled into a chassis mount bracket for the inner. Created some more space and no more rubbing.
I gave the Hilux a thrash around town and tried to get it to rub but its all good.ImageImageImageImageImage

Looking at fittings the same set of wheels as I really like the look of them over the factory 17's we get here in NZ. Although i'm going to stick with the factory size of 265/65/17 in either BFG KO2 or Cooper ST Maxx.

I am assuming the rubbing would not be an issue with the lower offset but same factory tyre size? anyone running these rims with 265/65/17??

I will be getting a 2" lift fitted in the future but plan on doing a few more mods(Barwork, complete canopy and draws) so the suspension package will be done once I know my weights etc.

Cheers

I have the first gen FJ cruiser wheels on my 2017 sr hilux with 265/70/17 BFG KO2s get scrubbing when going up driveway while turning at speed. Mainly on the drivers side.

Still have mudflaps fitted, just tied back a little.
