Steel rims SR5 wheel nuts?

Postby awill on Thu, 24 Nov 2016 2:25 +0000

A quick question to all those out there running Steel rims on your SR5 have you used the standard wheel nuts?

I have looked through countless topics to find no definitive answer as to if they fit. I'm going to run steel GU patrol rims and was just concerned that maybe the alloys were thicker where they contact the hub so the wheel nuts wouldn't be deep/long enough when swapping to steel wheels.

Many thanks.

I think you'll find that alloy wheels use a shanked wheel nut with washer and steel uses a chamfered wheel nut.

They might also be too short if they're not open ended, designed for the thickness of an alloy wheel centre.

Cheers guys, yes the SR5 nuts are flat, not chamfered so I bit the bullet and bought some longer black ones. Looks mint.

Just how bad is it to use SR5 rims on an SR using the SR wheel nuts? With where I live I'm not sure I'll be able to get a hold of any for a few weeks... if I kept checking them then surely it'd be right until I can get my hands on some?

The method of wheel location and clamping is completely different for steel rims with chamfered nuts fitting into tapers on the rim and alloys where shanked nuts with flat bearing areas sit on similar flats on the rims.

Apart from damage to the alloy rim caused by the taper of the nut there is no guarantee of the consistency of clamping force of the nut or location of the rim if you use the wrong nuts for the type of rim. It's not a good idea.
