Need to buy new tires + rims, will my setup cause problems?

Postby HighLuks on Sun, 10 Jul 2016 4:58 +0000

I need to purchase new tires and rims.
I am getting Hutchinson P/N WA-0567 Rock Monster 17x8.5" rims (http://www.rockmonsterwheels.com/produc ... yotatrucks)
I have chosen Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar tires. I'll be using runflat inserts in these tires.
My suspension will be upgraded and will have a 2-3" lift.

I had planned to purchase the tires in size 285/70R17. Is this the best size to get? Could/should I go up to 305/70-17 or LT315/70R17?

Thank you for any advice you can provide, I'd really appreciate it!

(These appear to be the tire sizes currently available for the Wrangler MT-R for 17" rims:)
LT245/70R17
LT245/75R17
LT255/75R17
LT265/70R17
LT275/70R17
LT285/70R17
LT305/70R17
LT315/70R17
35X12.5R17LT
37X12.5R17LT
38X14.5R17LT
40X13.5R17LT
42X14.5R17LT

285/70/17 should work very well on 8.5". If you go for 305 or 315, steering and general handling will be mushier. This does not concern those who are chasing only a look.

Clearance is hard to sort out until you actually try your chosen tyre and wheel combination. If you use the "Search" function, you will find a thread about fitting 33" tyres which has heaps of info. 285/70/17 is approximately 33" tall.

Also remember your offset! 265 is about the max you'll fit with factory offset probably try a +10-15.

Thank you. I'm going to be using Hutchinson P/N WA-0567 wheels, which supposedly have 4.51" backspacing (which by my calculations is equivalent to around a -6 offset?). With these wheels, the 285/70/17 should be no problem at all, right?

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it. Will 285/70/17 still work well with a 4.51" backspacing? I think this is around a -6 offset?
