Hi all,

I've been flicking through the forum and can't seem to find a definitive answer around tyre sizes on the N80.

I'm planning to pick up an SR5 soon and want to fit some BF Goodrich All-Terrains to the standard alloys. Keen to know what the largest size is that I can legally run on the car with no scraping and no modifications required.

Are the standard 265/60/18s as big as I can go? Has anyone fit anything larger than this with absolutely no mods to the car?

Well I'm picking up an sr5 with BFG KO2s in 265/65r18 in stock rims with no other mods tomorrow.

Won't get off the black too for a while so not a real test of potential scrubbing but will report back after a few days for you to give my initial opinion. I'd rather hold off on suspension until I get a bar and rear storage setup down the track but if there is too much rubbing then will just have to do the suspension sooner.

No photos sorry but it's close to the mudflap on the front at full lock in the driveway. I'd say 5 to 10mm but I'm not sure if they have wound the castor forward or not.

Off road, under compression on full lock it will rub no doubt but just on the front mudflap. Front mudflap is not so important with the big side steps to protect the body panels though.

I`m ordering my new Hilux here in the UK today. Really want to have the extra ground clearance of 265/65s rather than 265/60s.
Could you please let me know if I absolutely 100% have to do the suspension lift if I install the 265/65/R18?
If its just a little rub on full lock off road, then I can live with that... Also on full lock is it rubbing to the "front set" or the "back set" of the FRONT mud flaps?

New baby about 2 weeks after getting the new Hilux so no decent off-road tests yet !

If will rub a bit on the front mud flap (behind the wheel) though. I don't have a lift yet as still looking at options. I'm not going over 50mm on this car for my intentions and TBH looking at the arch/wheel I don't think that a lift less than 3 inch will have much impact on the rubbing.

My advice would be, if you can get the alternate tyres cheaper as a pre-delivery set, do it. Deal with the consequences later, if any i.e. Reform mud flap, remove the mud flap or get a lift. When you get them fitted ask them to wind the castor forward as much as they can at the same time.

Not a cheaper deal Creaky, I just need to get all terrains as don`t want to call the farmer to pull me out of the muddy tracks with his tractor...
At the same time thought to increase one size if that`s with no trouble.... Think Toyota dealer will probably refuse to install them (email and asked for quote no replies yet) and may say that it could affect the warranty.

Might just have to stick to the original size all terrains

Sharing my experience:

Just installed FJCruiser Wheels/BFGoodrich T/A KO2 265/70-17 Tyres on a 2016 Hilux Revo (Thailand Domestic Market) with stock suspension. No Mudguards and it RUBS on the Fender Guard where the mudguard would be.
Here are the specs:

STOCK:
17x7.5" (30 offset) Enkei Toyota Wheels
265/65-17 Bridgestone Dueler A/T D693III

REPLACEMENTS:
17x7.5" (15 offset) Toyota Wheels (Taken off a USDM FJCruiser)
265/70-17 BFGoodrich T/A KO2 Load E (10 Ply)

I turned the steering wheel and the rubbing shows on the fender guard:


Diameter of tyres went from 30.6" to 31.6" and rubs with the extra 15 offset. Borrowing a heat gun this week to modify the fender guards.

You mentioned it rubs on the fender guards, could you please correct me if I`m wrong: it rubs against the back of the front wheel arch (back of the front tyre) area on the plastic cover (fender guard), correct?
Do you think the modification is 100% necessary or is it something you can live with i.e. ocational rubs in certain conditions...

Also, I see you have a roll cover installed, I`m looking to get one to! Could you please let me know what make it is & any comments on the quality/function of the roll cover?

This webpage seems like the best source for Hilux owners helping each other, posting pics was the least I could do with all the information that I have gathered from this site.

Correct. It does rub at the back of the front wheel arch. (Where the mudguard would go) Rubbing when turning happens occasionally, but there's a big sound when you straighten the tyre and the aggressive blocks of tyre tread "pull" the edge of the fender guard and slaps it back in place. I tried using a heat gun to modify the curvature of the fender guard, but to no avail. What seemed to solve the problem, was to force the end of the plastic fender guard behind the "knurled" metal edge of the fender. There is probably 3-5 millimeters of clearance when turning between the tyre and the metal fender. (Not the plastic guard) Now there is minimal rubbing that I can live with, until there are more lift kits available to me in Jamaica. Otherwise to avoid these issues when using stock suspension, I would recommend using the stock diameter tyre which is 30.6" . 265/60-18 or 265/65-17 Depending which wheel size your Hilux came with.

I mainly bought it because I don't carry much load and I wanted to secure the bed. (My own came with no locking mechanism, but the Roll-N-Lock is designed to cover and lock the back hatch) Also, you would have the option to carry tall items in the bed, where a flat cover would be tricky to do so. There are slight leak issues. I was told it was not 100% weather-proof. I guess extra sealing can be done before installation to prevent water from getting in your tray. In the end you would have to assess what you want to do with your bed/tray and buy accordingly. Hope I helped you in some way.

Looks to be a rather generous 2", no modification lift

Yes it's a dobinson 2inch lift. C59-350 springs I believe. It's a firm ride but I like it.

With regards to the front wheels: Did you wind the castors forward as much as possible before fitting the bigger tyres or not? Reading some of the posts here: it recommended to wind the castors forward as much as possible to gain as much clearance as possible to avoid the rubbing... I read people have installed even larger 275/70 R18s & they seem to say the rub us minimal and no noise reported....
If you don`t mind, could you please add a couple of close up photos of the fix?

^^^ from what i have read and leant and there will be smarter people than me out there, so jump in pls.
I thought there was always a payoff between having as much castor as possible to run big tyres against the overall lift height. With standard UCA's, the more you go up, the less castor you should have to avoid other alignment issue.

Im about 35~40mm in the front with ~2.6° of castor running standard uca's.
