Gearbox issue

Postby Silverfox1111 on Sat, 22 Aug 2020 2:32 +0000

G'day peeps
Think i f....d my gear box today.
Was pushing our caravan up our yard in reverse using 4wd & was turning at the time. Had at least 1 wheel on grass so i thought that would stop any transmission wind up. While going backwards drive suddenly was lost. Gearbox seems to still work in auto however when its put into reverse there is a pause of about 5 seconds then it crashes into gear. The gear display on the dash has gone & it won't change gears in sports mode.
Anyone else had this happen or think what the issue could be & possible cost?

G'day Dave
No, out by about 3 months. Think it'll be a hassle trying to get toyota to help as it's got a tune on the motor. Although there's no way the tune caused it.

sounds like a blown reverse light fuse ... check in the small white fusebox , underneath and behind the glovebox . fuse is marked IG1 NO1 , its 10amp.

You f.....g legend!! A bloody blown fuse. Not sure why it went though.
Still can't get it out of park without using the "shift lock" button. Any thoughts?

It's all good now. Stole a fuse marked as ign 2 to check what you suggested. When I put a fuse back into ign 2 the gear stick comes out of park as normal. Thought the fuse marked as shift lock would stop the stick coming out of park but it was OK.
Thanks for your help.

not a problem , i'm glad thats all it was. I dont know why the reversing would have caused it , but that fuse feeds multiple things so its hard to say.

Is it possible the reversing lights on the caravan were too much for the fuse?
My van doesn't have reversing lights so I used the wiring in the plug for house power.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

shouldnt be the case -all lights hanging off the factory tow module are protected by a current limiting feature and a 30amp fuse near the battery. nothing related to the 10A Body ECU fuse which blew.
more likely it could be the wiring harness rubbing through on the chassis somewhere under the tub , which has been mentioned before by others.
