Have i F***ed it?

Hi,

Newbie here. Just bought a new hilux and have used 4H on tarmac. Not a lot (may 2 or 3 KMs) after coming of a gravel road. I only noticed when i pulled into a car park and it wouldn´t move forward in to a parking space on full lock. I changed it to 2H and of course it went.

I know what I did was stupid but being an ex defender owner (sold it to buy the hilux) I have never had to think about this before. Yes I am an idiot and should have read the effing manual. I know all that.

Question is how can i tell if I have done any damage. Its riding perfectly well. no warning lights. and no warning lights came on at the time.

I have serached on the forum but knowing from the defender forum that the search doesnt always work well so Ill apologise in advance is this has been covered.

Thanks
Tommy

Shouldn't be a problem as it was only a short time and presumably on relatively straight roads, the problems come when as you say in the parking lot on full lock. This is when you noticed the lockup. You won't really know if there's damage until you get symptoms which will be unusual noises and broken drivetrain bits. Don't worry, just enjoy your Hilux and learn the lesson. ;)

She'll be fine mate, you'd definitely know if you broke something! Stress less and enjoy the thing.

G'Day TT

I have a '12 SR5 D4D, so dont know much about the later models, don't you have a LED light on the dash that tells you you are in 4x4 ?

I dont drive my Rolux much :( So I always leave the transfer in Neutral & have driven out the cement driveway on a slight angle & its down a little slope a few times in 4x4 & only when I start to turn on the black stuff do I notice it is in 4x4.

Never caused me any problemos

As others have said you will know if you are starting to 'rip' the drive train out !!!

Thanks Gents for putting my mind at ease. Ill have the dealer have a look to see if there is anything obvious anyway in the first service.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Hi
Just play dum don't tell the dealer if same thing does brake down the track it will came back to bite you
All you had is a bit of wind up if you keep driving you wood no if it broke it wood be on a tow truck with big $ to pay.
Don't worry about it we have all done it a same time .
Lesson learned. #1.

I wouldn't be too stressed at all mate, and agree with Dave that I certainly wouldn't be telling a dealer! I'm a farmer, and so in winter I'll usually have the same thing happen a couple of times, straight out of the paddock and forget to switch back to 2wd but soon remember when I feel it starting to lock up. 375'000km on mine so far and no such issues. Stress less! :)
