Hoseless Diff Breather

Postby rjo89 on Tue, 09 Apr 2019 4:36 +0000

Does anybody have any experience with hoseless diff breathers? Good or bad? I know the newer Hilux has raised breathers as standard for the front diff and gearbox (?) in the engine bay, but just wondering how effective these would be instead of running hoses for the rear diff and transfer case?

Interesting. I wonder if it’s any more or less susceptible to being knocked off in scrub or water crossings?

They seem to work well, a great number of atv and side by side manufacturers use them on diff etc. Cheaper and easier yet susceptible to the same problems as the hose type.

Looking at the product, it seems to me that it would be a waste of time putting them in. If you’re going to go through deep water crossings and have the entire diff under water, wouldn’t the water/mud enter through the breathing holes? Looking at this product, the breather is down low, almost at ground level, kind of defeats the purpose?

Whereas if you has a hosed diff breather, up into the engine bay/top of your roll bar for example, there is virtually no chance of water entering the hose then?

Just my two cents…

My understand is that this product doesn't actually breath - it expands and contracts with air temp changes in the diff maintaining a sealed unit.

I wonder though, as oils tend to release gas overtime, would there be a point where this breather would reach its capacity and pop off or force air out the seals?
I might be wrong.

That was my understanding as well, it's a sealed unit and expands and contracts, hence the ribbed design of it.

Not about the gases but that point makes sense. There's not much about them online and the regular hose breathers are well tested and proven. Might just put the effort in and go the tried and true!

might be ok till the cheap rubber fails and allows water entry . besides at $50 a pop you would need 6. Just install regular pipes and be done with it

Haha $50

Priced like their $25k 4in kit for the 70 series (I do admit it is a waay better kit than the other coil conversions on the market).
