Tranny cooler hosing

Postby Silverfox1111 on Wed, 11 Apr 2018 3:29 +0000

Gday all
Going to fit a drivetech transmission cooler to my 2017 hilux this weekend.
Have the option of hosing it in series to the cooler in the radiator or bypassing the radiator & having the drivetech as the sole tranny cooler.
What is considered the best way of doing this?
Thanks

You want them in series. Can’t remember which first, but any decent trans shop will know.

A cooler will remove more heat the hotter the fluid passing through it is, this is the reason i put them before the cooler in the radiator, it also stops more of the heat entering the engine cooling system. If the cooler lowers the temp to less than that of the coolant then it has done its job, but this will never be the case if the tranny is working hard enough to need an extra cooler.

Theoretically the cooler in the radiator assists in heating the tranny during warm up or in extreem cold conditions so it is best to leave it in circuit.

And if it does succeed in getting cooler then radiator temp. Then it also assists in cooling the engine coolant so helps both ways.

Hi how did the install go? Want to put one of these kits on mine. Was the drivers side tranny cooler line the feed from the transmission ? What do you think of the drivetech kit?

Haven't got around to it yet. Dodgy back had me sitting on the lounge last weekend.
The kit looks decent quality.

Thanks for replying. What are the mounting brackets like are they pretty thick and solid? I was looking at the wholesale automatics kit but it is double the price of the drivetech one although the mounting brackets seem to be more substantial. If the brackets are meaty I’ll go with the Drivetech one. Also did you get confirmation on which line in the feed into the tranny cooler? Cheers Michael

According to a post on a fortuner forum the drivers side pipe on the radiator is the one that flows BACK to the tranny.
I'll measure the brackets tomorrow & get back to you on them.

Thanks appreciate it. BTW I was reading the instructions for the wholesale automatic transmission cooler and it states “Feed cooler lines through the foam below the A/C condenser. Run the new cooler line closest to the driver side to the fitting on the bottom of the radiator used by the old transmission cooler line. Run the other new cooler line to the steel fitting from the radiator formerly used by the old transmission cooler line. Clamp both new lines using provided stainless steel screw clamps. Use cable ties to ensure all cooler lines are secure.”

This makes me think the passenger side is the inward flow side from the transmission. I wouldnt see any sense in running cooled transmission oil back through the radiator. The drivetech instruction show hose “B” for mounting in series but I have no appreciation of this is drivers side or passenger. I guess if you follow the drivetech Instructions you shouldn’t go wrong. Cheers Michael

All the brackets are made from 15mm x 3mm bar. Seem like they should be sturdy enough, but will see when i mount it to the car.
I'm thinking I'll hose it before the radiator. My thinking is on a hot day when driving slow, rather than put the hot fluid from the transmission into the radiator & putting more heat into the water coolant, pre cooling the transmission fluid might help with engine coolant temps. Might! Worth a try.

Most places suggest putting the air-oil aux cooler AFTER the water-oil (in-radiator) cooler. Few examples:

Prado v6 is fitted before radiator. Thats the way toyo did it so that the way I do it. Allows the engine water temp to heat the trans in the colder climates.

Has anyone else fitted an aftermarket cooler? Thinking doing one in mine.

How much extra trans fluid is required to top up the trans once the lines and cooler have filled?

Bugger all if any. You will be hard pushed to notice a differance on the dipstick.

Done mine about 10 days ago, have it after Radiator, on scan gauge towing all up weight of about 5,400kgs, The trans temp runs from 65 to about 74, 74 was on 40c plus days.
Torque converter runs a couple of degrees hotter on normal running in 4th, load it up with a hill or two, it goes up to about 80 or a bit higher on TQU setting trans goes up a bit as well. Really load it up and TQU highest was 101c, trans about 90, that was doing the Great Ocean Road on the higher hills it was 40c at the time.
Today from Portland to Mount Gambier, 22-25c was about 65 on TQU, sittind between 80 to 95kms hour.
Done about 1800kms this trip, very happy with way temp is down, before installed trans ran upto 100c in Drive, or about 80 in 5th, done all my driving in 5th. Going to get a Richards lock out switch when I go through Murray Bridge on Wednesday for the tranny.

I filled the trans cooler and hoses before joining to Toyota lines, so no extra oil was needed

Measure the amount of oil the hose and cooler would take and put that into the transmission. Sometimes the capacity of cooler will be provided by manufacturer so no need to measure only hose capacity needs measurement. Prefilling the hose and cooler and trying to put the hose can get messy, tried :(

I have bypassed the cooler in the radiator when i did mine, I do not want any chocolate or pink milkshake issue in the future if the cooler inside radiator is to fail and allow both to mix and screw up the transmission.

Scangauge shows a lower temperature with the new cooler in place, it s 25000BTU cooler.
