Postby Hutch on Sun, 07 Jan 2018 7:24 +0000

Guys correct me if I am wrong but my understanding is that under 50kph u should be able to shift in and out of high range 4wd on the fly, I am having to reverse etc and put gearbox into neat real to get out of H4?

Hutch, you definitely can change between 2H and 4H on the fly. If yours is not releasing straight away then it could be because your diffs are a bit bound up from driving on hard packed road in 4WD - but it's more likely because your solenoid on the ADD is sticking a bit due to lack of use. Mine did this on both of my hiluxes. Shift in and out of 4WD a few times in a row when you're stopped to loosen it up and get it unjammed then it should be right. Pays to shift into and out of 4WD a few times every month even if you're not going bush - just to keep the solenoid from sticking.

good advice , and Make sure all the tyres are the same a mix of new and old or even different makes/pressures can cause the transmission to wind up and stay in 4h

Are we talking from 4wd lo to get into 4h you may need to stop. This could be found in the owner's manual. 2h to 4h can be done on the fly, but not necessarily so the other way.

Shifting from 4H to 2H should be straight forward if you are going in a straight line and haven't just came out of a turn (and assuming tyre pressures/sizes are the same or very close to).

I find that a quick jolt of the accelerator while shifting will pop it out of 4H most of the time.
I might be wrong.

That sounds right, just like the old double declutch but without the clutch... The 'blip' on the throttle allows for a gear change when the pressure comes off the gear train.

Hutch... There is a marked difference between manual and automatic in this procedure, the manual is disconnected via the clutch but in the auto unless you put it in neutral there is always drive via the transfer case which impedes the change from h4 to h2. Try selecting neutral in the auto and it may be more easily done.

My gen7 auto does go h2 to h4 on the fly but it crunches unless I select neutral when doing the h4 to h2 and it just won't go from h4 to l4 without neutral.
