2016 Hilux 4x4 GRINDING NOISE ONLY IN H4/L4

Postby Lou84Hilux on Mon, 12 Jun 2017 12:19 +0000

Hi Guys, I own a 2016 SR Toyota Hilux 4x4
I have recently noticed a strange grinding/vibration/shudder noise from only the front Driver's side when engaging 4H and going at low speed.
The noise would come on for less then a second then go away as when I engaged H2 again, i have also noticed once trying to get into L4 i get a Orange beeping/ flashing symbol appearing on my front dash & finally when trying to engage Diff- Lock in L4 I notice a RED FLASHING Diff-Lock symbol?....
Can anyone help me please, I would appreciate it so much with expert advice to get it fixed
Thanks guys

Where you stationary and in neutral when engaging L4? The noise could be the transfer case shift motor engaging but I only thought it made that sound going into L4.

Yeah i was in neutral, i came to a complete stop, i put the clutch in & then turned the knob to H4, once i started driving doing around 30km/h the Grinding noise comes on randomly, (Gear Crunching) i was told if i turn off Traction Control the noise will stop. Where ever the noise is coming from its not a normal sound

As per the manual, you need to turn off TRC (traction control) AND VSC (stability control). If you only press the TRC button quickly (like a normal switch) then it will only turn off TRC. To turn off VSC also you need to stop, put the car in park or neutral (I think) and hold the TRC OFF button for about three seconds. Both the TRC off and VSC off lights will illuninate on the dash.

If you don't do that in soft sand then your car is constantly trying to control what it interprets as 'sliding' but applying brakes to certain wheels. That is the grinding noise you hear.

Hey guys I had my toyota hilux dropped off at my Toyota dealership and had notified them about the grinding noise. After doing a 18k- 30km service they managed to find nothing expect for my diff oil which they found was black and very unusual.
Please let me know what you guys think.
Cheers

Black and unusual doesn't sound right, did they investigate and explain why? At 18k your diff oil should be clean.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
