Transfer Case issue?

Postby dhuds on Fri, 07 Apr 2017 3:57 +0000

Hey guys,

As I was reversing in H4 I put the car in neutral to let it roll to a stop but as I did this the car instantly stopped and stalled.

Doesn't feel like it engages 1st gear properly either while in H4

There is also a clicking sound coming from up front somewhere.

No issues in 2wd.

Any help would be appreciated.. was meant to be going away for Easter..

What are you driving on?? On any solid surface the drive train will tend to bind up, especially when trying to turn! All the wheels are locked and will be trying to turn at the same speed and when turning they will want to slip but can't so everything binds up and will easily stall a motor. Hopefully you haven't damaged anything!

The surface was fairly solid when I first notice then I tried it again at home which was on the road. Hopefully that's all it is.
Thanks for your help.

Yeap the hilux being a part time 4WD doesnt have a centre diff to allow the front and rear wheels to spin at different speeds.

Never engage H4, L4 or diff lockers unless your in a surface where the wheels are able slip.

According to my dealer you can use the H4 (L4 might be a different story) on any surface in the new hilux at least. Does not make a difference.

Ask your dealer if he know it's a hilux and not a Land Cruiser... the only difference from the old are a gadget knob instead of a lever through the Floor.

Refer your dealer to page 215 of the owner's manual, buller point 2 and page 217 near the bottom of the page...

The clicking sound sounds more like the actuator is buggared. One needs to be a bit more careful with engaging 4H or 4L on grippy surfaces. As noted above hilux is only part time 4WD so front wheels turning at same speed as back can quite easily do damage on a hard surface. N80 Hilux it seems the weak link is the actuator. Once it breaks the clicking sound will be worse when turning as the fronts are on average turning faster than the back and the speed difference is greater than when travelling straight. I had to have my actuator replaced when I shifted from N to D (auto) just (maybe half a second) before the 4L light went off as I was shifting from 4L to 4H. But I definitely broke mine through an error on my part. The car stopping in neutral is definitely because there is too much grip to allow the wheels to turn at different speeds.

there should be some sort of interlock to prevent the actuator from breaking in my opinion

on a side note , if anybody does have a broken actuator unit and would like to donate it to me ( i'll pay postage ) i'll try and find a solution to this problem. a broken mechanism in the middle of nowhere would not be good
