Hi,

Mine did the same, had to have the actuator replaced. Dealer said it was due to not being completely stationary when selecting 4L. Not true though, I selected 4H at idling speed. Stopped on a hill, shifted to N, selected 4L, 4lo light flashing on dash never fully engaged... So I went back to 4H and once I needed to shift to 2h it would just flash, as yours is doing. All on dirt. I jacked up front wheel and turned it, it made a grinding noise from transfer case. Thought the whole transfer case was stuffed. Dealer said all gears fine, and it works fine now that actuator has been changed. Hope it was a freak and doesn't happen again! The unbreakability was why I bought this car.

This happened yesterday coming off Double Island at Noosa North Shore - cost $350 to get back to Brisbane last night!

Mines been at the dealer for 2 days now, they still haven't worked out what the issue is? It's apparently mechanical and not the actuator, it may be off the road for a while until they figure it out, order parts and then rectify it.........

just out of interest , would the dealer be liable for the cost of the tow?

I have the same issue as well, really much interested on the results. but what I did, I tried to turn off the engine & wait for about 10 seconds then it disappears. tried playing with the knob put it on 4L the H2 then it goes off. But the warning comes out from time to time whenever I start the engine. Hope this could be a factory issue.

Toyota replaced the transfer case in the end - something had jammed in it?

Hi guys,
Mine has a very similar fault after taking on the sand for the first time a couple of weeks ago.
Since selecting into 4LO now the 4LO light flashes and the buzzer beeps continuously while in this range. Physically it feels it is in 4LO and the low gearing, forward speed and larger turning radius says to me that it is, however the light and buzzer still flashes while selected. When selected back to 4HI you can hear the transfer case select the different gearing and again physically you can hear, and feel the difference in change from 4LO to 4HI. The car drives and responds normally in this 4HI range and when selected back to 2HI you can hears small clunk from the transfer case as it deselect the 4Hi function.
This seems to be an inherited and not isolated problem with this vehicle and I for one am not impressed that this fault has occurred on a new updated car that is still labelled unbreakable

I watch with interest, given I am about to hit the beach in 2 weeks time.
Interesting thing those actuators I had one play up on my 150 prado and i was coming of the beach tried to engage low range and put it back on drive grinding noise, put in reverse all good?? Anyhow left the car on the beach overnight up on the dune went back the next day with a $500 tow truck to extract the car and jumped in it and put into gear no issues. Toyota checked it out, no issues what ever since until I sold it???

I had an issue a few weeks ago where it would not engage 4wd... I tried a few tricks but to no avail.
The next day it worked fine??

I was just lucky it was not wet where I was or I was in a lot of trouble.

I will mention it to them at its 10000 k service in a few weeks.

We had this issue with a few of the new Hiluxs at work, sounds like a common fault with them getting stuck in 4WD.
One vehicle had to get towed back to Toyota (800kms on the clock) and the other one i managed to fix it by engaging the diff lock and driving forward and backwards.

I did some light 4wding today..
Would not come out of low range.
Got told, turn the car on, put it into neutral, then turn it back from L4 to H2.
Beeps stopped, car ran normal!
Hope that helps some 4wd noob like myself in the future. :)
