4 High Slip Indication

Postby Yeau_Beau on Wed, 31 Aug 2016 12:33 +0000

Purchased a new SR5 earlier in the year and have only had a few chances to take it off road properly. The last couple of times in sand I have been getting a rubbing / mechanical grinding sound when ever I'm in sand and turning corners. When it happens I lose traction from the front wheels and the 'Slip Indicator' light comes up. I put it in 4 Low, drive the same and the problem seems to go away. Seems to be a traction control issue but gets pretty frustrating.

I took it into the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. Problem occurred last time I was in the sand so will be taking it back to the dealer tonight to see what they can find.

Any one else experienced this issue?

You need to turn off the VSC / traction control before hitting the sand or else your brakes will go nuts trying to negate the 'wheel spinning/slip' like you are experiencing.

Check the manual ... (I haven't but same as other yotas)

There's a button below the heater controls. Hit it once to turn off traction control. Press and hold to turn off both traction and stability control.

i had the same problem the first time i went on sand. Having not driven a modern 4x4 (stability control, traction etc) i was alarmed by the buzzing noise coming from the front also.
I put 2 + 2 together from the traction lights coming on the same time as the noise, a quick read of the manual soon sorted it. I believe to turn everything off you need to be in N or P in the autos as well as holding the button down, but check the manual.

Thanks guy, I did try turning off the traction control but the problem remained. Didn't try turning every thing off though, hopefully that will sort it.

Rookie error, I might go read the rest of the manual now...maybe.

When you select lo 4x4 you automatically turn all that off, that's why it worked fine in lo4
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

x2 ^^ This!

I noticed you said it only happens in sand, when I first got my stock lux, I used to hear a rubbing almost grinding noise when in sand. Obviously this worried me but others around me noticed that my front bash blates were rubbing along the ruts at times. Anyway after lifting the car ect I never hear it anymore. When we are out yahooing Nowdays i hear others say the same thing and I can see exactly where they rub.

Hi
I have a 2016 SR5 Hilux, went to Stockton beach on the weekend, all went well was very happy with the ute performance on standard tyres. The problem I have now is the slip indicator light is staying on all the time.
Went to my local dealer and he has no idea, he actually asked me to rock the care back and forward to disengage 4 x 4
Can anyone help?

Does the latest hilux come with any lockers?

Or, is it two open diffs (once turning off the retarded TC/ESP that Toyota touted as a replacement for LSD / Locker) ?
