Stuck in 4 LO - light flashing

Postby 01Turbolux on Sun, 28 Aug 2016 8:22 +0000

Hey guys my 2016 lux is stuck in lo 4, the low 4 light is flashing and no other lights are up, drives as if it is in low 4 but no matter what I do won't engage properly or change to hi 4 or hi 2, even had all 4 wheel off the ground to make sure it wasn't wound up under pressure and still no luck, anyone else had this happen???

I have to jerk it in reverse sometimes
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Tried a bit of back and forth with steering wheel turning ?

Is the diff lock off?

If an electrical issue then maybe a battery disconnect for a few minutes then try again.

Did you put it in neutral? Flashing light sounds like it's looking for neutral.

Sometimes when it wound up a bit I found I needed to get it onto loose ground and do a bit of a burnout, to let it unwind.

I know of another 2016 Hilux this happened to, It was caused by the electric controller attached to the transfer box breaking, Toyota have none in Australia so his truck was off the road for a while.

Not what you want to see from the new unbreakable Hilux,

Please keep us updated

Thanks

Yep as basically as bardenboy said, the actuator shaft had jammed, they have freed it but now won't engage under pressure (works on the hoist) so waiting to see what head office says but they will either replace just the actuator or possibly the whole transfer case

Rapid flapping/graunching sound

Postby Markdavo on Sun, 24 Nov 2019 8:18 +0000

I have a 2016 Hilux SR with 75000kms on the clock.

In the past week I've been driving along a sandy track in 4HI to get to a work site, about 5kms. Occasionally a rapid flapping/graunching sound comes from the front and the Slip Indicator light flashes briefly. There aren't any sticks or rubbish on the track to get caught in the vehicle's front area.

Today I decided to try the vehicle in 4LO and the sound did happen once.

Also, the 4LO Indicator light was flashing rapidly and a constant ding-ding sound (like someone hasn't fastened their seatbelt) started. Page 449 of the owner's manual states that if the 4LO Indicator light flashes rapidly I should have the vehicle inspected immediately.

Has anyone else experienced the slow rapid flapping/graunching sound?

Thanks in advanced,

Mark

Haven't experienced the sound you describe, but I did manage to shear off the wiring loom to the rear diff on a track last year and that caused all sorts of flashing lights from the diff lock, traction control, ABS etc.
Taped everything up and continued my journey, and couldn't get anything repaired until I got to a dealer a couple of months later - vehicle still went fine minus those features, and all good for another 20,000km since I had it repaired.

The sound will just be the traction control doing it job searching for grip by braking the wheel that's spinning.

4LO Indicator light flashing rapidly

Postby Markdavo on Tue, 26 Nov 2019 6:31 +0000

I have a 2016 SR auto with only 77000kms on the clock.

Recently while driving a short distance in soft sand the 4LO Indicator light was flashing rapidly and a constant ding-ding sound (like someone hasn't fastened their seatbelt) started. Page 449 of the owner's manual states that if the 4LO Indicator light flashes rapidly I should have the vehicle inspected immediately.

Who else has experienced this and what did you do?

Thanks,

Mark

I asked two questions and got a reply to the first, which was helpful. I didn't get a reply to the second and realise I should made two separate posts.

Cheers,

Never experienced it. Id have to look at the manual again, but i think it means its not engaged. Alternatively you've gone too fast, ( beyond its speed threshold)

Could be a faulty sensor , wire, or the operation of engagement/driving.

My understanding is that the rapid flashing and beeping simply means that 4 LO is NOT engaged.

I find get the vehicle into 4 HI then roll a little then stop and engage 4 LOW. Roll a little back and forth to get it to lock in. Once 4LOW is engaged your lights will go solid and beep will stop etc.

In a manual it’s very easy to tell if it’s in high or low range in a auto to some degree you can be misled.

If your 100% certain it’s in low then definitely get it checked out.

I also find there is a audible click when you disengage 4 Low
