Hey guys, looking for some advice / experience from others. I have not owned a large heavy vehicle in automatic before and am wondering if the following is normal. I thought the gearbox would actually be smoother than it is. Has anyone else had these issues?

- when accelerating after breaking (ie after slowing for a give way) the gearbox is often confused and revs up in a low gear then roughly changes up promptly.

- intrusive downshifts when breaking, that you can feel slowing the car.

- strange shifts between 3rd and 4th (mainly when cold). Most the shifts give a momentary pause on momentum and a definitive shift however the 3-->4 shift often just slurrs its way through and is distinctly different to the other changes.

Any advice / experience would be appreciated.

Yes, normal. This 2016 Hilus seems to prefer keeping the Rev's up even when slowing down. And at 1500rpm the engine actually sounds like it's working hard, although the instant l/100km shows zero when you're under brakes.

Its also not the most refined Auto in the business . in any case it's a work ute, so toughness is a bigger consideration...

Also your observation between 3-4 gear is normal when cold. All the oils are thicker and therefore once you hit a hill, its just enough for the auto to want to drop a gear in order to keep the engine loaded within it's happy torque range for optimal fuel consumption.

The downshifts when breaking are normal too, seems to be a common feature in new cars these days. Both our Corolla and 2016 hilux do it and a mate has a dmax that acts similar.
I find it annoying coasting down a hill with your foot lightly on the break... Next thing you know the engine has geared down and is revving much higher than you'd prefer. Then once your back on the flat it seems to take far too long for the "brains trust" to resume normal driving.

My solution is just to knock it out of "D" and change back up a gear

That in particular would really irritate me. It sounds as if they've made the transmission too smart for its own good, instead of letting the driver dictate terms.

I have a 2014 Hilux and it does the same shit. Drives me fcuken crazy. It's the worlds dumbest design and Toyota have said there is nothing that can be done.

I noticed the same.. Never owned an auto before now.. Got a 2016 sr5 now.. When you switch to sequential shift, if ya press on the gas, it changes up itself. In my missus Hyundai it just revs it's head off.. I thought that the manual over ride in sequential shift would let ya give it a bit more in each gear.. Apparently not!

Haven't noticed the 3rd to 4th shift, but since I'm a mere male and not particularly mechanically minded.... I probable need someone to point it out.

Perhaps it's something that happens in cooler climates, the posts above seems to be from southern states
Just a guess

It is particularly noticeable on mine, as I have a big hill just outside my house, so go up there when everything is still cold.

I can get a surge of about 600 - 800rpm when it changes gears. Kind of like when you keep your foot on the gas when changing in a manual car. My wife notices as a passenger as well, so quite obvious.

I may take a video to post here, as well as use it to explain to Toyota what is happening with it (not that I expect they will be able to do it.

The best fix is to go the other way, which is downhill

That would be good if you could do that, would be interested to see if its the same as what mine is doing.

Yeah, that blasted surge. Always make me think my 2016 gearbox's worn out already after only 18,000km.

I've never ever towed anything, and the Lux's only carted the driver around for most of that distance. Granted i'm overweight but we wont discuss that now...

Must be ok then if most of them are doing it. I'll ask the dealer when I get a chance but I can't imagine there is much they can do.

Just had the dealer check the 3-4 surge. Apparently Toyota are aware of this and are working out a fix. I received a service receipt stating same. They will contact when they know.

Anyone having issues with invasive downshifts at low speed (40-60kph)? Ive started to notice coming home from work, that during a gradual slow down to a set of lights there will be intermittent little "jabs" where it is shifting down. Quite annoying.... like someone just stabbed the break without asking

What setting out of sport normal and eco are you guys using ?

I have made some changes to some here this week, and find it quite good, removing the 1-2-3 surges, and working better with the extra power and torque from remapping.

Mine does it every morning when i leave home (still all not up to temp im guessing). havent noticed it anywhere else

Daz, i just leave mine in normal, as eco feels too dull and sport if i'm in a hurry

Interesting, mine doesnt downshift unless on cruise or slowing and braking.

Mine seems pretty well behaved as well. A lot better than some of the old autos I've driven.

Mine does it (revs up before changing gear) in the morning too, when its cold. Ie below 10 degrees - ish. After a few minutes warming up its ok, just the tailshaft clunk to worry about then
