I think around the 550km mark it came on. I really want to push it but get abit worried driving so long on the refuel warning lol

I had my auto updated today. Gear changes definitely feel a lot more snappier. It's still too early to say, but it feels like it's less eager to grab 1st when coasting into an intersection and then accelerating out. It's annoying when it drops into 1st when you haven't come to a stop. Dealer tells me it should hold 6th longer. Time will tell.

sorry to resurrect an old post!

I have an 09 model SR5 auto petrol and a small surging issue under load between 2250-2500rpm, noticable more under load up hills or with a trailer on. i have been told by a tuner that the auto firmware could fix this issue but before going to Toyota with my problem and then charging me a small fortune i was wanting the opinions of experienced owners.

Has anybody else experienced this at all?

I have done all the usual process of elimination items that were suspected first, air filter, fuel filter, new spark plugs, cleaned MAF sensor and throttle body etc.

any help appreciated

I had my auto update done recently at my 10,000km service. I'd previously had the new tail shaft installed too (around 4,000km). 2016 Hilux (March) SR Diesel 4x4 Auto.

At first, driving around town (small country town) I didn't notice much difference. But then I went on a trip to Adelaide and on the highway saw an amazing difference!
Previously it wouldn't hold 6th in cruise unless you were going downhill or on flat ground - the slightest hill would kick down to 5th and 4th. It was constantly doing it, and driving me nuts, to the point of me turning off cruise a lot of the time.

But now it even holds 6th going up slight inclines! In fact some hills if they get steep it will still kick down (smoothly too I might add) then kick back up to 6th as the incline gets less, but I'm still going uphill!! Ie it's working as an auto should.

And I know this is subjective, but I think fuel economy is a bit better too. Previously I would average around 10l/100km doing a trip to adelaide. The most recent trip was down to 9.0! But maybe I just had favourable tail winds or something ;-)

Anyway I think it is definitely worth doing - I just wish Toyota would be a bit more proactive and get their dealers to do this to every hilux that comes in rather than waiting to be asked about it.

Do we know if the auto update was for certain build vehicles, ie once it was released was it already applied to new vehicles.

Someone posted earlier in this thread that builds from 9/16 onwards should come as standard with the update.

Had this done yesterday. Immediately noticed the difference pulling out of the driveway. Decisive shifts and no slush !

Yes I had mine done, I would say the gearbox feels tighter as in holding the gears better, less hunting..

What options are available to stop the hunting between 5th and 6th when doing 100kph and above. Anything but dead flat or downhill it just goes back to 5th :(

I asked the dealer about this last service, their reply was 6th is just a bit of a selling feature, needs to be ideal conditions to be effective!!!!

Ok so mines been back 3 times 2 supposed updates but no difference in performance, getting a bit fed up now I call again and book it in, they say we need to go with you for a test drive ok, so I explain the problem, when I slow down for a corner say 10-20kph the box basically can't find a gear it revs up and then once you are on the straight it slips into gear. So the test drive guy gets in beside me we drive if he turns into a corner then floors it half way through the corner, the gear change is better but I'm not training for Bathurst, next 2 corners the same thing slow in and floors it, what's going on ?
So I'll pick it up later today and here's hoping or can I have my money back.

Just tell them to update the ECU to the latest update or you will call Toyota's head office. You can check if they actually did it on the toyota tech stream site later or look at the ecu box i think.
