Can anybody tell me what the eco normal power mode affects in the auto, is it only throttle response only or auto behaviour as well? I find eco better for towing as i reckon it holds the higher gears better, but it may be just appears to. I find the power mode it seems to rev its nuts off and is reving too high to use the torque this motor has at lower revs.

I have made some changes to some here this week, and find it quite good, removing the 1-2-3 surges, and working better with the extra power and torque from remapping.

Have you had your auto reprogrammed?

I have done tune and reprogram for them, yes.

The torque request from the pedal has also been changed as part of the mapping to still have a great spread on the 3 settings as well.

Next is working on being able to switch off the "brake depressed throttle inactive" when required.

Difflock on any time.

Trac and ABS off when required.

2016 Hilux Auto Software Update

Postby Beta on Wed, 10 Aug 2016 1:04 +0000

I was just in at the local Toyota Dealership as the Prado's touchscreen had died (lucky that's under warranty still ! replacement unit)
anyway they told me that there's now an Auto Software update for my Gen 8 Hilux, mines going in tomorrow and will be the first one they have done so hopefully it fixes those stupid changes and settles its mind on what gear to use, a few extra ponies would be nice, maybe with proper shifts it will feel like it.

Also they said they have ordered a replacement tail shaft for mine and they are just waiting for it to arrive.

I was just in Monday getting my tailshaft replaced. No one said anything about a software update to me.

Is the replacement just a new shaft of the same variety? my dealer denies that there is a new part.

Apparently this software update only has been out for a week, the Tailshaft replacement takes a lot of stuffing around and paperwork, the Service Manager certainly let me know this, so I'd imagine that if they can get away without doing it they will. I'm in a small country town so it does help having a good relationship with the local Toyota Dealer.

OK, so I had the Auto Update done yesterday, now the Hilux gearbox runs as you would expect, the changes are smooth yet purposeful, there's no indecision in what gear to choose or that stupid lag between shifts. It even feels (could be my imagination) that the engine is stronger due to less slippage. I think with the nice strong changes it makes the engine feel stronger, about half way to the power button mode. It still doesn't hold 6th gear any better out on the road.
Go and get it done guy's, its heaps better and tell them to do the new Tailshaft if needed as there is a replacement program, its just heaps of paperwork for the dealer so they will try and avoid it.

Thanks for great report. I just rang my dealership and they said they knew nothing about it. I told em they better look into it asap! Will battle with em for new tailshaft also. You don't spend 60k to have old software and noisy tailshaft.
Other than that i love my new hilux.

Cheers.

On the tacoma forum some guys are reporting better ability to hold 6th gear. This and the torque converter constantly working is my only gripe with this gearbox. Just wants to sit in 5th all the time. Hopefully some improvement is better then none.

I have also read some people have a lag when changing from reverse to drive. I haven't noticed this.

Hi Beta, has the software update improved the fuel economy of the Auto?

No, the fuel economy is fine until he DPF decides to do a burn which seems to be once every tank, I can get sub 10lt per 100 (even in the 8's sometimes) until it does a burn off, then it skyrockets up to 13lph

Good question cause my dealer didn't know about it so they are off hunting for any info.

It would drive me nuts if I worked @ Toyota and had the public coming in and asking for things like this...

They didn't know about the auto head light adjustment, and couldn't change it with their computer plugged in, that "apparently can change everything that can be changed" yet the sequence I got from new hilux could change it.

Pretty poor form for Toyota not making this info easily known for dealers
