Torque Converter Lockup

Postby mad_industries on Tue, 12 Jul 2016 5:41 +0000

Is anyone aware of any kits available for the 2016 auto trans yet?
The old man has a richards auto elec kit in his 200 and works well and eas hoping to source a kit to help lock the converter in 6th at highway speeds... And also for towing and lower temps.

Is this a software mod or mechnical mod? Also does it need to be installed by a tech, mechanic or DIY?

Is there any detriment to doing this? To the torque converter lockup clutch/mech I mean. I've had a Wholesale Autos kit for my A750F 2011 SR5 and haven't put it on yet as I was worried about how the lockup would handle load.

I'm also haveing an issue, only ever seen it lock up and drop below 1900-2000 rpm once and now with more weight on (500kg) I can't get it to lock in, when selecting manual shift it says it's in 6th but still doing over 2000rpm at 105-110.

You do not have a website? How can I buy this kit with you? Would it be a tuning chip for transmission? Does it improve the gear shifts?

I rang them today, seriously considering the Lock up kit. Hopefully get to use the 6th gear, I hear its amazing. :?:
Their website is http://richardsauto.com.au/wp/

Great video link on the website of a 200 series with and with it a kit installed. Huge difference

here's some info for you guys
i have the Richards kit installed in the new Hilux and what a difference it makes
The pulling power up hills is awesome and my fuel has gone down to 8.1 l per 100km compared to 9.1 l per 100km
You notice it lock up around 70 km and it flies up to a 100 km before you know it and the best thing is unlike others brands of lockup kits which you must manually disengage it otherwise you will stall when you stop this kit will automatically disengages when you go below 60km
6th gear is still hard to get into with the lockup kit unless you are on a completely flat road so i decided to do a test driving to work the exact way and holding it in 5th and the following day making it going into 6th by taking my foot of the accelerator and then gently accelerating again i found no difference in fuel economy so my conclusion is not to worry about 6th
all in all the lockup kit so far is great and will pay for itself within 1 year of driving due to the lower fuel usage
Hope this helps you to decide

I got my richards torque converter lock up kit this week but it didn't come with installation instructions. I've emailed them for a set, but I don't assume they'll see it till Monday. Does anyone have installation instructions for this into a 2017 hilux? If so, any chance of sharing them?

Dual speed lock up from richards cost me $730. Used for the first time last weekend towing a 2T caravan & has transformed the car. Tows so much more easier, car is quieter & less buzzy, & used nearly 2L/100k less fuel. My next car will have one of these fitted before I get a tune.

G'day Silverfox,
Any idea if the Richards one is the same as the stock lock one? I have been looking at stocklock for towing my 2.5t van.
Also was it easy to install?
Cheers, simon.

G'day skeb
Don't know how they compare.
Was easy to install. Took me about 2.5 hours, but a lot of that was just working out where to run all the cables.
Had to cut 2 wires going to the ecu & solder 4 wires to each of the cut ends & solder another wire to the speed sensor wire in the ecu loom. Run a cable to the battery & another to a piggy back fuse. Get the switch into the panel with the diff lock switch. Also had to mount a heatsink to a panel behind the left kick panel.
Biggest issue I had was the fear of stuffing up the wiring going to the ecu.
As long as you can solder properly it's a DIY job.
