Diff ratios 2016

Postby Bob83 on Thu, 07 Apr 2016 7:39 +0000

Hi,
does anyone know what diff ratios the new hiluxs have? And also are the centres interchangable with series 7 hilux?

Thanks in advance, Bob

Ratios have always been shown in the specs in the on line and hard copy brochure for previous models. Don't know about this one though.

Bob,

2.4D Workmate A/T 4x4 – 3.583:1
2.4D Workmate M/T 4x4 – 4.1:1
SR V6 A/T 4x4 – 3.909:1
SR 2.8D A/T – 3.909:1
SR 2.8D M/T – 3.583:1

Overseas they also come in a 4.5:1 ratio and a 4.3:1 ratio.

4.5 is not available to order locally but 4.3:1 is.

4.3:1 Front ratio = 4120109C80
4.3:1 Rear ratio = 4120109B90

You’d have to wait until it is ordered and delivered from Thailand and also pay genuine Toyota prices.

4.3’s would be 100% perfect for a 34” tyre on a 2.8D4D A/T

I was “this” close to ordering them for my hilux & running 34's/35's, but changed my mind at last minute prior to order and will follow it up down the track.

The other ratios, and requirements for tyre diameters you can work out with simple mathematics:

(Original Diff Ratio) divided by (Original Tyre Diameter) multiplied by (Proposed Tyre Diameter) = final drive ratio

(3.909 / 30.6”) X (34”) = 4.34:1

Regarding interchangeability with N70……front end is interchangeable and same Clamshell design and size. Therefore the 4.3:1 option is ideal for N70 owners now. They just need to find an aftermarket 4.3 ratio for the rear.

Rear end is not interchangeable as N80 runs 8.8” center as opposed to N70’s 8.0” rear center.

In the manual SR for 33" tyres 3.7 would be ideal.

3.9's equate to 34" perfectly.

But because there are no 3.7s for the larger new rear diff, even thou they would fit in the front, 3.9s would do.

Youd have only slightly more revs than stock, but given the heavier rolling mass, especially if your running a large/wide 33" tyre, youe probably better goin the 3.9s anyway.

thanks max one more thing who would do a change like this for me in Melb ?

After running the n70 with 33 all its life and always winging about the tall first gear(when towing ) i want to get this one right. With the load i will have on the back and the already low revving 6th gear i think the slight gear down will be beneficial.

I had me N70 regear completed by ARB Keilor. I supplied all the parts. including solid pinions spacers and master install kits and they fitted it all up along with the locker. the hilux was there for 3 days.

it really depends where you live, then finding something reputable closer to your location.

Don't live far from you actually. Rob did my lift based on your car I think. I've got the silver n70 that was one of the first milweld rock slides.
What's the best place to source these gears. Or should I wait till peopl start crashing them.

MattyAzza, was thinking bout this further....and yes - because of the dual overdrive ratio's in the new gearbox's (5th & 6th), setting up the diff ratios to suit a larger tyre while running one size smaller (i.e. 3.9's perfect for 34's but your gonna run 33's) would actually work out better, because you would get into 6th gear sooner, and it would become more useable, not to mention the slightly better than stock crawl ratio in 1st low range. win win.

Yep....Genuine is the only option at the moment due to the 8.8" rear diff. So to save some coin Id be chasing up local wreckers to see if theres any smashed ones already.

I just spoke to Nitro gear & Axle in the USA, and the new tacoma's coming out later this year will have the same upgraded rear diffs as the Hilux's now have, and Nitro are working on releaseing a 4.88 ratio in June. Which obviously is a little high for our local requirements, but they did mention a 4.5 ratio will follow a couple months later and see what happens after that.

I told them that 4.3 and 4.5 ratios were the preffered aftermarket options here.....you'd find it hard to find aftermarket 3.9's to suit so genuine would be your only ootion.

Edit: Id actually consider ringing 4x4 Obsession about installing the gears as well, which are located in Melton.

Better start looking around for some gears. Doesn't seem like anyone is wrecking these cars yet.

melton Toyota sell geniune 3.9 and 4.1 gear sets for $1050 each. But said they are not interchangeable. From manual to autos. Is he just reading the parts catalogue or would he know better!

He doesnt know shit that guy...trust me.

For reference, the Diff ratio breakdown for the N80’s is below:

2.4D Workmate A/T 4x4 – 3.583:1
2.4D Workmate M/T 4x4 – 4.1:1
SR V6 A/T 4x4 – 3.909:1
SR 2.8D A/T – 3.909:1
SR 2.8D M/T – 3.583:1

The front of the N80 is a carryiver 8" Clamshell diff the same as the N70 with the ADD as standard issue now.

Yes....he is partly right in that you cannot "directly swap" from a 3.5 to a 3.9 or 4.1

That is because the carrier for the crown gear is offset.

One offset is for 3.5 and 3.7 (N70) gears and a different offset carrier for 3.9 and up (same as Prados)

Therefor you can fit the 3.9 ratios but for the front install you will need either a carrier to suit or a front locker to suit the 3.9 and up diff ratios. Then its just bolt in install by a diff specialist.

If you wanted to go to a 4.1 ratio, you can keep some costs down by installing a "thick cut" 4.1 gear from Nitro in the USA. This thick cut design alleviates the needs for a prado carrier or locker as the extra thickness nakes up for the offset difference and will fit into your 3.5 diff.

Hope that makes sense.

Mate you know your stuff! this knowledge is very hard to come by. I really appreciate it. Was thinking front diff lock anyway so this might have made up my mind. So rear straight swap front I need gears and diff lock. Then I'll never get stuck again!!!

Thats what im doin....the dealer is sending the hilux to Opposite Lock next door to install a front ELocker before i pick her up so shes twin locked from day one.

Still umming and ahring if ill get em to regear at the same time.....regear stretches the budget that little bit too far ontop of everything else atm.

I got quoted 2200. This gear change may need to wait I recon.
What about wheels. Would I get 275 70 18 on the standard rim without rubbing?
