Hi guys went to dealer today.
My manual SR5 has the same fault . Was told it was the tail shafts and was the first manual ute he has seen with this fault.
He also told me it could be the way I drive. Ha ha ha
really so these hilux are unbreakable as long as you drive slowly and nicely !!!
so spread the word it is not just autos !!!

I've also spoken to the dealer and said I want it replaced and they've told me they don't replace they try and fix first but if I want it replaced they can do it first but it will not be covered by warranty!

Received a call from the dealer today, after I escalated to Toyota they have agreed to replace my Tailshaft rather than repair. I don't understand why they are still being delivered with this fault! All new trucks should be remediated before delivery!

I rang Toyota Australia and lodged a complaint, I also lodged a written complaint on their website. My dealer told me that "they didn't know about the new Tailshaft" part until after they were contacted by Toyota.

Just an update. The Thud has returned after about 500km of smooth sailing... im so disapointed in this car.. the dealer needs me to bring it in again to verify that its back (because obviously im imagining it.) Does anyone have proof that an updated tailshaft exists?

They replaced my Tail Shaft with a new one. It was 100% better for about 1,000 km but had gotten worse over time and now back to where it was before they changed it. Had to wait quite a while for the new tail shaft to come from Toyota but obviously it is the same design unless Toyota screwed up their design twice. Letting the dealer know the issue is back. Will see what happens.

I took my auto sr5 back to Toyota about 3 times. The first time they regreased the spline and the problem came back after a week. 2nd time they regreased again and same again, it came back after a week. The third time they claimed that Toyota Japan had sent them a new type of grease to use. I couldn't believe it but this magical new grease actually fixed my problem and it hasn't come back in about 3 months. I asked about a tail shaft replacement too and they said mine was the new design. It was a January build.

Fark me! I hope you got an old one.... Just got my new tail shaft today and it's a totally different truck. So smooth.

Ok so obviously no clunk now, but also smoother all round ?
What's better beside the clunk fix, I'm keen to know because I have a vibration going on.

The dealer has asked me to take it back so they can confirm the problem is back. The first time they come to a stop they will know it is back. They tell me the Tail shaft replacement is the current fix and there has been no further update from Toyota. Let us know in a few weeks if you can feel it coming back. I noticed it slightly within a couple of weeks and then it just got worse. Very similar to when I first bought the car. I see others have had the the replacement also to find the problem return.

yes and no more clunk

How many KM's since you had your's replaced? Have you noticed the problem returning? There are a few of us that thought it was all good and then it came back.

i got mine done at the 10,000k service. They didn't replace the shaft, just pulled it out and re-filled/machined the splines and new/more grease. I've done 4000k since then and haven't had a problem (hope i'm not jinxing myself).

It sounds like some dealers have mechanics that have been around the traps a bit longer and can fix it first go.
I normally get my services done in their after hours 'night' servicing schedule, but to get this problem fixed they actually asked me to drop it of during the day when they have their 'technical' staff on.

Got new tail shaft for mine yesterday, has taken some of the vibration I was experiencing away, and the clunk of course, we will see how it goes. ;)

I've just ordered a new sr5. After reading about people experiencing problems with their tail shaft, we decided to request a new build rather get one off the showroom floor. My question is, has anyone received a recently built sr5 that is still experiencing these same issues?
