So to confirm - has anyone had this problem on a 2017 build Auto?? Can't seem to find a definitive answer by reading through.
Thanks.

Mine is a February 2017 build. Definitely no issues.

Edit: Forgot to add that it's also an auto.

Jenks, just to double check, is the manufacturing date Feb 2017? There's a difference between manufacturing and compliance dates, and sometimes dealers may be a bit (probably deliberately) fuzzy on it to confuse buyers into thinking that they're purchasing a recently manufactured car.

Of course, sale date is completely different from manufacture as well, as it could've been sitting in a dealer's yard for a few to several months before sale (although that's unlikely with a Hilux given how well they're selling).

I have a 11/2016 auto sr5 took it into the dealer for 1000 klm check asked them to check a slight noise in the front maybe a brake caliper when i reverse out my driveway and first drive off but don't hear it again till i reverse anyway they couldn't pin point it but they said they would do the tailshaft repair why there's no noise no clunk drives perfect. Now i have this almighty clunk when you stop and start like the whole driveline is moving back and forth now i checked my part no-37100-0K820 which is the new part so why the hell did they file the spline on a perfectly performing shaft so now im in a fight to get it replaced because they f##ked up done something they didn't have to do and this is not why i went there for is it about the money from toyota to do these repairs i am really pissed off wife had to drag me out again today

Had my 2016 SR5 into the dealer a couple of weeks back to address the thud clunk tailshaft issue, they said they did the recommended repair (file and grease) and did the transmission firmware update. This repair made a small improvement for about 250kms but returned to be even more annoying, now it seems to be worse with a load bang or shudder on take off and a shudder when stopping in traffic. Dealer wants me to take the mechanic for a drive to show him what it does so he can fix it but won't accept they made a bigger problem.
Let's hope they can fix it because it's the only issue I have with the vehicle.

Others have made mention of their dealers replacing the tailshaft in its entirety. Has yours raised this?

No mention of replacement as yet but I will ask what they intend to do as a permanent fix, you can put lipstick on a pig but you still got a pig.
I'm up on the north NSW coast and the dealer hasn't tried to fob me off but they are trying for the cheap easy fix first up. I'm a mechanic myself and they know that, so far they have been up front with what repair they will try but won't go into detail.

Took the service manager for a lap around the block, he confirmed that Yes its the shaft issue and they will order a new replacement shaft Assy immediately. He explained in detail what they have found with the faulty shafts and really thinks that they shouldn't have removed the grease nipple on the new models. Great service and back up from this local dealer.

Yep my Service Mange said the same thing, couldn't understand why they removed the grease nipple, I've got the replacement shaft and after 5,000km the clunk is back, if I had to drive in stop start traffic every day I would have sold it by now, this and the fuel gauge is really the only thing that $hits me apart from the harsh ride empty. Why do Toyota ignore problems for so long........this really needs a recall. I'm worried when it happens under load (towing) that it will eventually damage the gearbox shaft.

Whats the best way to reveal this flaw? I suspect mine may be developing it as I've noticed as I pull up / pull away from standstill a dull clunk can be heard / felt.
I'd like to be able to replicate it with the service guy sitting beside me in the vehicle so I can avoid half a dozen trips back to the dealer.

Toyota have asked to have the vehicle for the day tomorrow, ongoing testing they say. Service manager said they are getting a lot of complaints regarding this issue and head office have asked them to investigate,WTF.
Keep you posted as to the outcome of this and what they will do to rectify permanently.

This is a scary story John.
I have a Jan 2017 built hilux with 3800km and a couple of days ago I noticed a very light 'double bump' when I pull up at the lights. There is no noise and nothing happens when I pull away or when I pull up slowly. I called the Preston toyota dealership today just to ask if this was normal and they booked me straight in for the filling of the spline and to pack it up with new lube and seal.
Now I know these guys like to do warranty work because they make money from toyota so this is all a bit scary. My drive system operates perfectly at the moment (except for the tiny little double bump). I hope they don't f%#k my car like it sounds they did yours.
Let us know how your fight to get it fixed goes.
Cheers,
Tony
