I just picked up my new Lux on Wednesday (September build). I had a look under the car and the tail shaft is the new variety.

I have done about 5000km since my earlier post (night after getting the new Tail shaft and Auto Software), and I have to say the Ute has been rock solid.

Have done a round from Perth to Albany on the black top and a bit of gravel. Couple of similar length country runs.

Also did a 2 week trip up to Geraldton, Kalbarri and Exmouth, with a good deal of Sand, Gravel, Rock 4wd Low Range work without missing a beat.

Very happy with the Ute since the fix. Good job Toyota! :)

Only two issues I have with the ute now are the poor radio reception and the fuel gauge accuracy, and these are more annoyances than real issues...

I had the new Tail Shaft fitted at my 30k service, a bit annoying that it took Toyota 30k to finally fix it, all seems good so far, time will tell. After I questioned is it a different part no. to the original, he said yes and also said that the new part has a grease nipple, anyone else notice this on their replacement tail shaft ?

Got my replacement installed today.
Sooo much better. Its great, exactly how it should drive.
Had a look underneath the car when i got home same part number as shown above. Yes i did notice a grease nipple. Also spoke about fuel guage issue. They said there isnt a fix as yet although he is sending a report to toyota. Hopefully no more issues.

I have the same issue odometer is now around 24000 klms. Thought it was the brakes at first. Dropped it into Toyota yesterday and they knew what it was when I explained the issue. All they did though was grease the joints and said it was all fixed. The clunking still happening driving home.
Called them back & told them I had done some research and what the solution to the problem has been in this forum. Heard from them today, they are taking it back tomorrow to file the splines. Will see if that fixes it. Guess I will have to go through the process to get a new tailshaft if the issue persists.
Hilux is early 2016 model and has the old part 37100-0KG80-00.
It seems that Toyota should be issuing a re-call for this problem?

i was told that filing the splines is what they are supposed to do as the first attempt to fix the problem, then if that doesn't work you qualify for the new part.

I had my tailshaft replaced and the transmission update done today and it drives like what a new car should. No flaring between shifts and not as much hunting between gears. I will report back in a week about economy.

Oh and the damn thud is finally gone.. Only took them 8 months..

Wanna hear something funny? I have a previous model 2015 SR5 Auto and have a clunking in the tailshaft when coming to a stop or taking off. Happens intermittently with different severity. Been greased etc several times. Now at 30,000kms and Toyota have just told me that NOT towing and NOT carrying around full loads contributes to my problem as the tailshaft isn't under load and dries out.. That's the first time I've been told NOT towing something is a problem. (As mine is a old model 2015 the tailshaft model I have is 37100-0K700-00). Oh well, just now return it every time it starts happening again.

Well 5,000km's later and its back, its a sharper harsher clunk this time and very noticeable in stop start traffic, I can even get it to do it by throttling on and off with the throttle. I took it back and they had a look and said that's there's not much else they can do now as its had the new shaft and the auto update. They said they don't know why Toyota went back to the old shaft/spline design as this design had the issue's in the past.
not sure where to go now................Ranger ? V6 Amarok... :o :o

Well, you could start by not taking 'theres not much we can do' for an answer.
Stuff em. Pressure them to make it right. There's a fault with new vehicle, why just sit back and cop it? I've had a clutch replaced at 11,000 and both discs, 40,000 after they developed a wobble, both on Toyotas dime.
You dont need to be an arsehole, but you do need to make it clear that you wont be dropping this until you get some satisfaction.

I just placed a deposit on a new SR5 auto, do the new ones come out with the new tail shaft yet or do I have to go through the process of having it replaced if I am unlucky enough to have the clunk?

Should have the modified shaft from factory, I believe from may/June build onwards

Field fix tails shafts have this part number: 37100-0K8##

You will need to book in with your dealer and get them to replace yours for a field fixed tail shaft as you have the old tail shaft that has the issues.

Toyota have released an updated to this in TNF 88/15 release 30/11/2015

Just to be clear mine has a "J" in the part number. 0KJ00-00.

On another point do you think a greasy film is normal on the front drive shaft near the seals?

Thanks,

Rick

I've just read through all these pages and it's made me a bit worried. I've just ordered a new 2017 SR which will be delivered late Feb/early March next year. I hope these tail shaft, auto trans, fuel gauge and software issues have all been dealt with by the company. Will be pissed off if I get one or more of these issues.
Crossing the fingers.
Good to hear the problems being fixed though.

You'd have nothing to whinge about if they get it all fixed, one plus I guess. :)
