2016 Hilux Tail shaft Thud/Thunk/Clunk

Postby nicovdw on Tue, 26 Jan 2016 8:47 +0000

This has been discussed a fair bit in the main new Hilux threads, but I thought I would pop it into it's own thread.

So my Dual Cab SR5 has been back to Toyota 4 times now, and it is still clunking like a mothertrucker.

The first two times they pretty much just greased, and it helped for a few hundred km, the third time they filed the splines and greased, and that helped for a few hundred km, but when it came back it was worse than before.

Had it back there again 2 weeks ago, and they did nothing, only filled in a Dealer Product Report (DPR) to be sent to Toyota to replace the drive shaft

I am not sure how long the DPR process will take, but I have been thinking of taking it to a bunch of different dealers to see if someone else can do a better job. I know some folks have had luck with machining of the splines, etc. Do I have to take it to the same dealer I bought it from?

Seriously staring to hate this bloody truck.

Fwiw, the 80 series had/have same issue in their shaft setups. It's considered 'normal' greasing does 'help' the feel and sound but in reality the grease is simply pushed out at great force under load placing stress on your seals

I don't know if its a related issue but whenever I select reverse from park my ute makes a loud bang. I haven't taken it back for this issue yet but at the first service I asked about the thud on take off and they said it was "normal".
The thud on take off is annoying but the bang i notice when I select reverse doesn't sound healthy.

Mine makes a clack type noise when I engage reverse when parked n a steep incline. Not everytime, but enough to piss me off, though not as bad as feeling like I am getting rearended every time I stop.

I get a bit of noise going from Park into reverse on a cold start usually. but figure i'll start worrying after the first proper service if it's still there.

I'm not sure of the exact reasoning but someone a lot smarter than me, told me that if you park on a hill, in an auto, place it in 'park' then pull the handbrake then turn the car off you're 'loading up' the 'park' gear/brake.

Since I've got the missus to follow this procedure the thud from the gearbox disappears.

1. Come to a stop using brake
2. Place the car in Neutral
3. Activate hand brake
4. Release brake pedal pressure
5. Select 'park'

When you come back to your car, selecting 'drive' will be a lot easier. You should use this procedure when off road also. I hope it helps someone :D

So to clarify, this is only an auto issue?

Yep Locknut. That is pretty much my procedure. Probably only notice it when I forget or if someone else parked.

No fix for the stop and go thunk though. Although I have noticed that there is no thunk when I switch to neutral before stopping.

I suspect it may be a combination of driveshaft and the auto clutch, since at one stage it was only reproducable in eco mode, and at the moment seems worse in power mode.

I was thinking of just keeping it greased regularly, or at least after water crossings. Anyone know what kind of grease/gun combinations I need?

Correct crustie, because of the tight tolerances between the spline and collar. The torque of the engine in the autos prevents the spline from sliding until the load is removed when you stop. Hence the bump noise. I believe there is a fix on the way but this isn't the first Toyota to suffer this problem.

Not specific to 2016 but relevant to auto's

Nice, thanks Deadly Beast. I had seen quite a few of those, but it was a while ago, and I lazy assed my response above.

To rephrase the question, as I was not fully awake when I posted that:

Can anyone recommend a good quality, but not expensive as hell grease gun? I will be using it primarily for this, so it does not have to be workshop durability, but would like it to last the next 10 to 20 years, and not have priming or reliability issues.

I have been eyeing the Lincoln/SKF grease guns. They look like they will fit the bill, and I will probably end up getting 2, since I will be using regular Lithium based for Spider, and Molybdenum-disulfide for slide yolk, so seems like less of a PITA to change out grease.

Next question, has anyone used a LockNLube Grease Gun Coupler? Can you comment on how well they work for this application? Reviews look pretty good.

Hi Guys

Just had my October 2016 Hilux SR5 at the dealer for the whopping thump when stopping at the lights and or taking off hard from a stand still.

They did the Toyota fix, clean the splines and re grease. Good for 200klms.

When i mentioned to the dealer that i believed it was the torque convertor holding on or not having enough stall. He immediately said that's correct and toyota planned the tailshaft recall as the first item to fix. Go figure. I am supposed to hear back on monday for the next possible fix.

Will keep you posted.

Other wise what a damn awesome car

I escalated mt DPR, and got a call back from Toyota this afternoon. Toyota advised that the dealer should carry out no more repair work, as they had already did the dealer fix.

At present they are investigating a fix, and we will advise when they finalise the required fittings.

Not sure if greasing it properly myself is going to fix it, but am goig ahead and buying the stuff I need, as I will need to regrease between services and after heavy water crossing days anyway, as far as I can tell.

Sounds like the same issues as the Prado, one Prado a replacement shaft second was fine with grease..

I just had my 10K service and had the service department have a look at my tailsahft thud. When I mentioned it they were very receptive and said it was a common problem. (Which was a nice change from the blank looks I'd get from Ford with any problem with my Ranger) Long story short, they greased it and told me there was a current approved fix that entails removal and machining of the tailshaft, but if I was prepared to wait they're hearing rumors of a new design tailsahft that should be available in the near future.
Fingers crossed it's available soon as it's the only issue I have with an otherwise great vehicle

Ihave the same problem with my 2016 dual cab sr5 and it has only done 800km.
i am taking it back to the dealer on Monday to see if they can fix it. I have to say i never had this problem in my old 2009 Hiux.
I had a similar problem with a BMW x5 which they were never able to fix!

just keep mentioning it every time you go in. I also have this issue and will raise it at first service..along with squeaky brakes. I've only ever driven it on the road and only done 5,000km. As long as there's warranty..i'm not going to worry.

I have had my Hilux back to the dealer 5 times now, apparently the latest fix completed on the 4th March will rectify the issues. Very annoying-will wait and see if I get the usual thump after 1000km
