The Part no on my faulty shaft is 37100-0KG80-00. is this the same as everyone else that is having this issue?
More interestingly is anyone with the new part no 37100-0K820-00 having the issue reoccur?

Mine is also 37100-0KG80-00 and has the issue. I've given my dealer the new part number, hopefully he can source it for me...

Yep 37100-0KG80 is the original shaft, 37100-0K820 is the modified shaft, done about 7,000km with it no dramas as yet.

any one wanting a new tail shaft... better be prepared for a wait, i was at my dealer this morning and they confirmed the new part, but apparently there are only 15 new parts coming into the country per month!

I'll be interested to see if my new car has the updated tail shaft or not. We don't receive it for another month. Apparently it is a September build. My only concern is that they may have a huge stockpile of the defective shafts and subsequently may continue putting them in new vehicles.

Hi, been on the site for awhile but this is my first post.

Got the SR5 Auto back in March and have had the thud since new. Initially told them at the first (free checkup) around 5000km that there was an issue. After I collected it they wanted me back in over the month to do the fix once they had the replacement part - indication only at that time that it was some sort of clamp....

Advised them that I if it wasn't going to cause any other issues I was happy to wait for the 10,000km service, and they organised to have the needed parts for the fix.

Well 10,000km service done and replacement 'clamps' put on along with what ever else they did to it. Drove out of the service centre with the same old clunk. Only got around to calling them a couple weeks after to advise the issue was still there and was advised to bring it back in to go over.

Attended this morning - got told by the bloke who met me out the front that the 'clamps' have already been done and there is no fix for the issue at this time, so nothing they could do. I asked what is being done about it and was told that they were trying to work out the issue. Told him that I wasn't copping paying 60k for a vehicle to have this issue and questioned the fact there are replacement tail shafts being installed on vehicles, he quickly said that he was aware of shafts being replaced but that they don't have any and would need to contact Toyota to see where they were and order me one, so there was no point in me being there - complete waste of my time. Customer Service.... Don't tell me there is no fix when you know darn well there is one...

After our 'discussion' in the parking bay he told me that there weren't many replacement shafts around and that he would call Toyota and then contact me back to let me know - see what happens....

I have the new tail shaft and while at first it seemed perfect the clunk is back but nowhere near as bad. It's more of a grab on the lower slower downshifts almost like a new person driving a manual. It's annoying as hell. I'm desperately waiting for the software release that Toyota is trialling to be made a "tech bulletin" so that I can go and get it installed to see if that helps. Anyone know the status of the updated software?

Mine does this trick with the downshifts as well as a really annoying jolt when coming to rest.

I have June 16 build SR5 2.8l auto and with 3k on the clock, had been in twice before for the clunk and erratic shifting. Once at 1k and again at 2.5k.

At the second "inspection" I said I was aware of the new part number so graciously supplied above and that auto software update.

The service rep pretty much changed his tune within 15 mins (and a chat the service manager) after showing him the new part number. Then booked the ute in for the following week (today) to swap the tail shaft to the new part and complete a full ECU update.

Picked it up a couple hours ago and took it for a decent drive..... its sooooooo much better to drive!
I'm cautiously optimistic, and at this stage I think most of that is down to the auto software update. But the clunk is totally gone.... at least so far....

Happy days!

Toyota have replaced my shaft for the second time. The first time they replaced it with the old part number ending in KG80-00. This time they have replaced with the part ending in K820-00. I have done about 1000 km after the change and so far so good.

Does anyone know if the software update has been released as a "tech bulletin" yet? Or has anyone had the new software installed in the Sydney Metro area?

Asked my dealer again. Tells me the new shaft is a "trial part" and not every dealership has them.

What are the software updates about? Are they an ECU update for the engine or a TCM update of the transmission software?

This is not a trial anymore, there's an escalation procedure in place now to handle this issue, however the buyer needs to initiate it:

1. when you first bring it in, they'll clean it up and re-grease the mating parts.
2. If the noise comes back, they'll send the part out to de-burr.
3. If you come back again, they'll replace with the new part.

So minimum 3 visits before you get the new part.

i went through Clintons Toyota Campbelltown. They seem pretty good so far. Kristy at the service desk is excellent.
They didnt know anything about the fuel gauge issue though when i asked what was going on about it. (off topic).
