Is this happening in auto or manual models as well?

i had my spline regreased at the 10,000 service and... after 5000 more the thump has returned particularly on take off and not so much on slowing down.

I'll raise the issue at the next service again.

Had my 20k service done at Artarmon, since I was not happy with Pennant Hills.

They reapplied the fix. Told me it was done in a shirty way before.

No clunk, but I now have the shudder at takeoff under load.

Hi, I was at castle hill dealership on the weekend to sus out new sr5 auto prices, and asked to speak with a technical manager with regards to the the tail shaft problem. I told them the condition of me purchasing a new hilux would be that I get in writing that Toyota can guarantee new release models no longer have the known issue. I was told only verbally that there were no new replacement parts to replace faulty one and that they only do the re grease polish type fix. He advised that this issue only happened on older model hiluxes and all new onesse about 2 mo this back

We're no longer an issue. Apparently the issue was caused by the machine that cuts the metal for the tail shafts and as they put a large number of tail shafts through the production line to be cut the blades were getting blunt and causing burs and not making a clean cut. Was told that now Toyota reduce the number of tail shafts to be cut and replace the machine blades. Now, this was all verbal and I couldn't get it in writing. I also mentioned that I need confirmation that Toyota have fixed the issue And it's confirmed before I decide to purchase. Not sure if that was all bs. Please confirm for those that still have the tail shafts thud clunk issue the build date and if fix has been applied. I was also surprised to hear from them that they knew nothing at all about a new replacement part. Hoping you can all share your thoughts on this and provide confirmation if it's still an issue in recently purchased hiluxes ( say around 4-8 weeks old) thanks all

Slight correction to sentence above re the fix. I meant to say that apparently in the factory where they produce the tail shafts, the blades that cut the metal were getting blunt and those ones that were towards the end of the cycle just before they replaced the cutting blades were the tail shafts that had the issues. So for all recently built hiluxes, they only installed the tail shafts that had been cut with clean sharp blades ( and they also reduced the overall number of units that get cut by any given set on machine blades) which is what prevents the issue. Again, this was all verbal and dealership was not able to show me any bulletin or evidence to prove. Anyone else hearing the same thing? I want to hold off from purchasing till I can get confirmation. Thanks

I just had mine replaced on Monday. I bought mine on release day but didn't get it until mid November due to the colour I wanted. Started having tailshaft issues at around 800km. Took it in for the grease fix at 1000km and all was good. Issues came back at around 1400km. The car now has 3700km on the odometer and now I have a spanking new tailshaft. Before you ask, no I don't drive mine much.

Mine has been in 4 times for this 2015 n70 auto. Greased first 2 times, 3rd time apparently de-burred tailshaft spline and 4th time regreased again but used nickle anti seize instead of grease. All under instruction from toyota head office. Problem re occurred with 100ks of being in each time. My dealer has now put in a request for a replacement tailshaft

My 2016 auto had the tail shaft issue, took it to the dealer to note it was there because I wanted to fit a lift kit. They agreed there was a clunk, so now with proof it was there I fitted my lift. You won't believe but the tail shaft is heaps smoother I am surprised how much nicer it is to drive. Had the car booked in for the grease etc but not going to bother. Also on a different note the suspension upgrade is 100 times better than the original stuff.

My hilux is going back in next week for the third time. They told me last week that they were ordering me a new ta shaft the called me yesterday to say that given it is only 4 weeks old and a May build date that Toyota told them it already has the new tail shaft however it is still got the thud / clunk. They said next week Toyota experts are going to be at the dealership to take it for a drive. They also did a remap of the software for the auto transmission last week as it was not nice going from 3rd to 4th gear. The test driver last week took the car for a drive with me and also noticed the problem. Does make the car a bit annoying and uncomfortable to drive so hope they find a suitable fix soon.

I took mine back to Toyota on Monday and the bloke there said they changed the grease to a "lower friction" grease. This fix has stopped that thud I felt while stopping but I've only done a couple hundred k's since. Also PWR mode seems alot more responsive than it used to be so maybe they performed the remap as well.

Hi I may be on the wrong track here, however I have a manual built march 2016 I do not have any problems. You talk about getting it regreased interesting! I was under mine yesterday & noticed the spline has a dust cover over it like the front CV joints & there is NO grease nipple to grease the spline like on the previous model, they would have to cut the cover off & refit it after doing a grease packing on it to get to the splines just thought may be Toyota are trying to stop people putting too much grease under pressure in there causing the thud, clunk you speak of, may be the autos still have a nipple to grease I don!t know :o

Nope my auto is the same, no nipple... They had to cut the clamps off to get the cover off to regrease. Mine is an SR auto, build jan 2016 delivered march 2016. Regreasing worked for a few hundred km, now after about 1500km clunk is back as bad as before. :(
Am waiting to hear back from dealer re next step...

I noticed the thud as soon as I got mine (march built sr5 Diesel auto). I took it into Sutherland Toyota for the 1000k free inspection. Mentioned the thud. They told me it was the hitch rattling in towbar receiver. HaHA.. Here we go.

I did have an interesting conversation with a service manager from a different Toyota dealership. His belief is that this problem is associated with the friction in splines because it is considerably longer than the previous model (more suspension travel) And that there are a few driveshaft workshops around Sydney that can fix it.

I'm Hoping Toyota can sort it out before I have to go elsewhere.
