Hi, we have a brand new auto Hilux sr5 2016 - picked it up in March and it only has 5,000km on the clock. This car is doing our head in. It has been back to the dealers 5 times now. Problem we experience is a jolting motion at 40km when braking, without fail. Sometimes it does it when excelerating at 80km - at first they greased the tail shaft. That didn't work. At 1,000km service the dealer replaced the tail shaft and no difference. Since then the car has been driven by dealer's mechanics and tested - they found irregularities in the way it drives but as yet can't fix the problem. It's like the computer has no idea when to change gears, does stupid things, over revving then dropping. And the fuel consumption is horrible. Driving the lemon in Eco and it does 250km on half a tank. We have had it! Today we spoke to Consumer Affairs. We want the car fixed or replaced. This is ridiculous. Brand new car driving like a dog.

Also the trans doesn't seem to know what it's doing, going at 110 down the hwy and it won't pick up top gear unless I take my foot completely off the pedal. Other times in my street doing 50 it grabs top and vibrates before changing up. Going in for 1st service Thursday and I'll be telling them. Great car shit tranny.

Yes this is exactly what our Hilux is doing - you will see my previous post regarding the lemon. I am a female not too good with car lingo but I think I explained the problem well enough. Good luck with your 1st service. We had the tail shaft replaced at our first service and it did nothing.

I think you will find most have these issue's, the tailshaft clunk is very common, the fuel use is the gauge as after it says empty you can still do another 150km's. In regards to the auto they can be indecisive at times which I think is the software, try driving it on power mode and see what it does, I think there needs to be a software update for the auto, and Toyota will never do a recall, they always keep it under wraps and slowly do the fix after about 60,000km's of whinging

Thanks for that. Unfortunately after having spent $60,000 on this car I am not happy about having it drive so poorly with so many issues - perhaps Consumer Affairs will light a fire under them. And I am DEFINITELY not going to wait for a fix at 60,000km - we can barely stand to drive the car and it's only done 5,000km

All models seem to come out with a fundamental flaw, seems this may be it on the new model?
What a piss off.

My hubby is a diehard Toyota man! We have had all new Hiluxes last 10 years. Never ever needed to go back to dealer with previous models for anything whatsoever. This time around every week at the dealers and on the phone with Toyota. Seriously! Not on!

Toyota Australia are puppets, its hard just to get onto anyone with some authority in their head office.
To say they really care about an individual's problem......non existent.
If its a wide spread and well publicised problem... different story.
Id be getting onto motoring publications that pull some muscle in the Motoring world.

Interesting some are being told there is no fix yet others have received a newly designed tail shaft which has done the job. I have also been told by my dealer that they are ordering the newly designed tail shaft for my SR5 and this should fix the problem. They told me it could take a while to get the new part because it is in demand but they ensure me it exists. Good luck all and hopefully we get a good result soon. Update: just told my new tail shaft should arrive from Japan around the 9th of June.

I think there are two different problems here:
1) The tailshaft issue which gives clunks and a rocking sensation when stopping and starting.

2) The gearbox issue. Mine does the same with the funny 3-4th and sometimes getting caught out when accelerating after breaking and revving up before changing. I have found it drives a LOT better in power mode, wish there was a way to get it to automatically start in power rather than eco.

Not sure what / if anything can be done about the gearbox.

Yep, TMC got it wrong. Have you checked the fouling yet? 5,000 kms, probably really fouled up badly (EGR).
In theory, the 1GD-FTV is a well designed engine, but there are some problems, including injectors linked to the DPF. I know someone that has sold 16 sets of injectors in the past week. ;)
The tail shaft problem has been a big one in the Prado 150 models, as well.

The ACCC is useless. It's not funded properly.
The way to go is an action in small claims in your state. The only state this is a problem is WA, because of what the Barnett government has done to the ceiling. How much you can claim, that is. A government that is there for big business only in my opinion. Most states are in between $25,000 to $30,000.
Toyota Australia hates these sorts of claims. They hate it ;).
A good example of this is Sharon Rowe's case which lead to the recall of all vehicles which had copper injector seats in them. By the time that exercise has finished, it will have got them millions.

I was just talking with a one of the Toyota Mechanic's, he was a bit annoyed that Toyota have stuffed this tail shaft machining up again, it happened on the first of the last model Hilux as well as the early 150 Prado. I also asked about the auto changes and he said this new auto has sensors on the box that lifts the engine revs when its about to change to try and smooth out the change. This seems to be causing that slipping feel which obviously changes in Power mode. It nearly feels like the auto need a shift kit like we used to do in the old non electronic autos, maybe when we start to see a few tunes coming though this will eliminate that soft fluffy change. Yes it would be good for the Power mode to stay on after restarting as this button really does change the vehicle's engine response and auto changes.

I guess the question is.. Is it a newly designed shaft, or are they just trying another one + their standard fixes
Sorry if this has already been covered I just read page 5

Heard back from the dealer today and to my disbelief toyota want my car back for a third time to try a different type of grease. I cant actually believe this. Wasting everyones time. Just replace the bloody thing. Im starting to regret trading in my Mitsubishi Triton for this hilux. I thought toyota were supposed to be the best. Seem like a bunch of mugs to me.

Can you give us the part number when the fit it? It seems some dealers are denying its existence.

It is on page 2 of this thread. Would be good if one of the recent folks could see if it is still the same: TO371000K820
