I'm buying a grease gun and a box of 300g tubes. Two pumps one a week may fix it

I agree Beta, but mass production is a different thing. My personal opinion on the clunking issue is that the torque converter isn't slipping enough at idle. The engine is making power as soon as you drop it in gear, this is why it lurches forward when you put it in park and take your foot of the brake. Too much drive line wind up.
Not sure but these days that may be easily fixed with a software upgrade. Hope so anyway as I'm dubious about the tail shaft upgrade.

Slip joint on the new hilux propeller shaft doesn't have any grease nipples, only grease nipples for the spider yokes.

you could be onto something there, now that I think about it, although the tailshaft still clunks when you come to a stop at an intersection. I do notice sometime when putting into gear out of park that there can be a clunk, like the driveline is loaded up (sort of like when you put it in park on the boat ramp on a steep angle with a lot of weight hanging off the back)

I agree, when I put the car in neutral it stops just fine... The other thing is that I noticed eco mode clunks more than normal mode.

Eco mode sucks and I don't think it gives any better economy as you have to flog it to get any where, now power mode is where its at :D
maybe I will try power mode more to see if it clunks less..................

I've also noticed that the clunk is not happening at all if I select neutral on the auto as I'm coming to a stop. I also think it's something to do with the transmission. And on that note, the software of the trans is terrible. The worst I've driven. You almost have to be coasting downhill for the trans to select 6th gear!! It's shocking

Yeah its all a bit haphazard with gear changes. Every now and then I get a rough change at low speeds that really clunks and it also doesn't like throttle being applied after backing off, feels like the torque converter really grabs in a rough fashion.

Update.....

Hilux went into Toyota today for their second go at the field fix which involves the shaving of the splines on the tail shaft where it connects to the back of the auto transmission. After performing the procedure the Toyota tech was of the opinion that the fix had not achieved the desired effect. They contacted their tech specialist who has arranged for the dealer to submit the appropriate documentation to have a replacement, upgraded tail shaft sent to them and installed into my truck. This is done, apparently, on a case by case basis. I'll get back to everyone as to whether the revised tail shaft is any good

I've had my SR5 Hilux into Toyota 4 times for this clunk issue. They have told me that they have filed the splines on the tail shaft. After performing the procedure the Toyota tech was very confident that the fix has resolved the thud problem. Unfortunately that's not the case a few days later it was back, better than ever. They now have contacted the Toyota tech specialist who has arranged for the dealer to submit the appropriate documentation to have a replacement, upgraded tail shaft sent to them and installed. Toyota after sales you need to be ashamed and take a good look at yourselves, this is the worst service I have ever had. When you pay good money for a Hilux and treated like crap
"Oh What a Feeling"
I'm sick of this bloody Hilux its a heap crap. I would not recommend anyone to buy one.

Yep, the field fix, sorted mine for about 800km, now its back. Probably how long it takes for the grease to be propperly squeezed out.

I had mine machined 2 weeks and 2000K's ago and it's perfect. It was pretty bad before the fix so it's an easy comparison to make

My brand new SR5 Auto has this to, Taking it in Monday for 1000k check and for them to take a look. The dealer told me it was only a problem on the early ones and mine is a march build so they were surprised.

Mine is also a March Build and has it quite badly a times and at other times it's barely noticeable. I raised the issue at the 1000km look over and was brushed off with the dealer saying Toyota didn't have a fix yet. Seems the dealer network just want to or have been told to bury this one if they can.

Yep, I had herd about this before purchasing, and asked the salesman specifically about this. He said "yep, that was only on the original ones". Mine is a feb or march build and has it.

There is a fix keep pushing!!!
The dealers have to clean the slides up that stops the thud!

Received mine back from its 10,000 service last Friday. They greased it all up as I mentioned there was a clunk although it's barely noticeable on my sr5. Now it's smooth as. They said that the machining and grease fixes the problem "90%" of the time and if it doesn't they'll replace the whole thing.

Well..got my HiLux back from their 3rd attempt to fix the tail shaft clunking. I received the replacement/upgraded tail shaft and what a difference!! The thing is so smooth and seamless now. Doesn't even compare with the truck prior to the repair. So, if you're suffering from the tail shaft clunking and the field fix of machining the spines of the tail shaft hasn't given you a completely smooth ride, then push up on the dealer to have the appropriate paperwork completed and sent off to Toyota for you to receive the upgraded tail shaft fitting under warranty.

Another positive, was the issue I was having with the auto transmission not wanting to stay in 6th gear has greatly improved also. The trans now will sit in 6th gear much more often and makes me think the tail shaft was actually loading up the trans causing this issue.

Had my auto sr5 in for its 1000k service, had about 1400ks by the time I got there. My clunk developed from about 400ks on wards and just got more and more consistent.
They did the usual shave and grease.... So far so good.... But time will tell
