Hi Guys

I had mine back again for the tail shaft issue, they have fitted a new tailshaft with a new part number. I have done 1500 klms so far and all is good

Do you happen to have the part number?

Also, when did you get it done? Had my 10k service done last Wednesday, and they claimed there was no fix yet.

FFS. Have mine in again today. They notified me the car is done, but they have not replaced the shaft, as there is no fix yet, which accoring to Checadaus is BS...

I gave them the part number, and am refusing to pick the car up.

Also, I had a shudder when braking. They skimmed the disks, which I am not happy with, as it will reduce the life I can get out of them. Thinking I should demand new disks....

I have the thud in my 2016 Auto I have not had it back to the dealer as yet since the 1000km check up but I will when I get time.
Maybe I'll have a look myself as it does seem like it's the splines binding as its only on braking and take off.
I'm a mechanic but not Cars but articulated earth moving equipment sometimes has this issue in the center drive line when turning when the splines are tight same principal splines closing
It should dissappear once the shaft gets a little bit of wear in the spline but I don't want to wait 100,000kms haha.
Any spline binding also puts unnecessary load on diff pinion and gearbox output bearings
Part number in my car is 37100-0kg80-00

Just to update my earlier post on the 2016 Hilux tail shaft thud.
well guess what it is real and Toyota is aware of it.
there is a problem on the line and several of the new Hilux (Autos as far as I know) have the problem.
i had the technical training and customer support manager for franchise development and regional operations eastern region ride in my hilux so he could experience the thudding first hand.
To Toyota's credit they have offered to replace the tail shaft with a new teflon coated tail shaft that will eliminate the issue.
These have been ordered and shipments are coming to Australia.
there are some in the country but you will need to complain to the dealers to get one or otherwise wait.

Not just auto. My manual 2016 with 5000ks has been diagnosed with the same problem. They said they will re shim the tail shaft spline and if that doesn't fix it it will be replaced...

I've got inside word that there will be a recall, Toyota are manufacturing new tail shafts as we speak, the first shipment will be heading to the mines then filtering down to us, so stop taking your Utes back and back

I can live with a clunk any day of the week after getting rid of my 2012 bt50/ranger, in 70000kms I had three engines replaced, 2 broken springs in the drivers seat, blown turbo hose, 5 broken fuel caps and heaps of other little things, all in three and a half years, unfortunately the new hilux is the best out of a bad bunch, Toyota have gone cheap from 2006 onwards to save money

Won't be a recall, recalls are for safety related items only. Maybe a field fix / customer exercise.

Funny I felt this on the demo when I drove it back in November, I assumed it was the rear drum brakes (haven't had drum brakes on a vehicle since my old HZ ute !!) anyway my Hilux has been doing for a while and seemed to get better (13,000km's so far) but its still there, this is where Toyota $hit me when there's an issue as they drag it out forever with records each service (like the oil usage on my 200 series back in 2008 took until 60,000km's to   ) so now how long will this tailshaft fix take ? I also have a fuel gauge that I can do 100-150km's after it tells me to refuel as well !! these are only minor issue's on a very good vehicle so far with regards to driving and towing, I keep buying Toyotas as I never really have any major issue's and its hard to beat that resale !

MY all new hilux is crap when I stop or take off it feels like I'm towing a trailer or there is a gas bottle rolling around in the back.
Speaking of the back the central locking lasted for about a day on the boot lid has been back 3 time's.the front brakes are squeaking, the plstic grill is has big bubbles on n it and needs replacing, the badge on the passenger door is falling of and the arm rest on the drivers side keeps coming off.
Oh what a feeling

all annoying things!! but at least the engine's going strong :).

I also have the squeaky brakes and will get them to sort it at the up coming service...just keep going back while the warranty is there and hopefully by the end of the 3 years you'll have a reliable car.

My 2016 Hilux SR5 is in for its 1000kms check up today. I have the auto and I have the same tail shaft thump. I was told that they are working on a fix but no time line was given for when that might be.

My fuel gauge reads weird as well. When I fill it up, it stays on full for ages then just drops to 3 quarters of a tank... then stops on that for ages then drops to half a tank. It doesn't seem to know how to slowly go down with the level of the tank? Hopefully they can knock that on the head today.

Other than these small issues, I've been pretty happy with my purchase.

I picked up my SR5 6 weeks ago. The thud is annoying but the dealer says it's not at risk of breaking. They have admitted it is likely to be a recall issue and that Toyota are working on a replacement tailshaft setup.

I have changed my driving stule, and do a proper grease every 5k, and it is liveable. Mostly down to driving style. A gentle foot goes a long way.

Nah, I drive gently trying to get the best fuel economy during the week because I have a long commute with about 60 sets of traffic lights. Some days it's worse than others but the ute goes in for it 1000km check up tomorrow and I've mentioned it in the booking so we'll see what the response is...
