Pretty sure there was a recall on the new lux for tailshaft clunks!

Have had the tailgate replaced, definately not that clunk. Have cleaned out rear drums and shoes, greased behind brake shoe and backing plate, so far it hasn't replicated as yet

Take it easy
Your thread title "Driveline/clink/clunk when stopping" is exactly what the "...Tailshaft Thud/Thunk/Clunk" thread describes and is why it was merged ;)

When other users search for this same problem, duplicated threads will take them longer to find useful information.
If the tail shaft is not the issue how about creating a new thread that does not have "driveline" in the title and post back here if you find the cause as many members who have the exact same issue, with the same "thud" would like to know.

This thread, as I see you have contributed to, recounts others who have had the shaft replaced with the new upgraded shaft, only to have the symptom return

Good luck

So I had a new tail shaft installed September 2017 (my SR5 had approx 45000km) after approx 2500km it thud/clunk came back. At service in October I mention it, they test drove it at said they would contact Toyota as the issue has come back. I followed up with them today, apparently they have another new tail shaft ready to go in. Hopefully it resolves this issue. The service ‘manager’ told me that the tail shaft supplier apparently didn’t put diamond coating on the splines? And that when they did start putting it on, they didn’t tell the dealers and the dealers were machining it off? He was contradicting himself when I pushed him for clear answers, anyway I’ll let you know how I get on.

I ended up with the tailshaft clunk and the local Toyota dealer replaced the shaft under warranty today, now we shall see if it returns.

The dealer also tested the airbags and it seems that the centre left bag is to be replaced under warranty as well.

I must say that I cannot bitch about the service my local dealer has provided, very easy to deal with.

Stupid question but has anyone had this noise issue from a Manual vehicle?
I have to much junk in the car to determine where the noise is at the moment precisely.
but I drive both a auto and a manual regularly and the auto drive line clunk is almost identical to to the noise I’m getting in the manual under aggressive acceleration?
But I need to get everything outta the car and try it.

Hi Guys,
I have a 2015 SR5 2.8 / Auto 80,000k ( Great Machine compared to my old 2005 KUN26 300,000k) However it has exactly the same thud issue that is being talked about here. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to be a common issue.
For me It only happens in drive, on takeoff from a stop, at say traffic lights, as soon as the brake pedal is released.
If it is put into neutral at the stop, then back into drive, there is no thump at all, all gear changes smooth as silk. It really feels like it is coming from the transmission, or excessive free play in the diff, however the various dealers advise, that it is a tail shaft spline issue, as my vehicle has the old part number shaft (37100-OKG80-00) Splines not properly machined.
Having been in the trade for many years & worked with Toyota both here & overseas my vehicle is very well maintained & gets plenty of TLC !! Have just completed the 80,000k major service, fully synthetic Penrite fluids right through including the Auto. Didn't make any difference to the thump.
My Dealer tested the vehicle recently to verify my issue & put in a DPR to Toyota. Within a couple of days was advised that approval had been given to replace the suspect shaft, so I was quiet relieved & very pleased at the outcome. New shaft has been ordered & just waiting for its arrival. The customer service I have received from the dealer & Toyota has been excellent !!
OK update, new tail shaft assembly installed a couple of weeks ago now by the dealer P/N 37100-OKR30-00 have done about 3,000 k since then. Problem fixed & the Beast now drives as it should. What a relief.

Took mine in Tuesday 90,000 k service.
Tailshaft clunk that I have just noticed.
Service manager advised that they need to try field service fix of grease and machine or Toyota will not cover replacement.
My concern is that I only have 10,000ks of warranty left.
Will discuss this with service manager when I take it in next Friday

What is the current status on this issue? My son has a 2015 Hilux GUN126R SR 4X$ TD 2.8L Dual Cab first registered in Jan 2019 with the binding prop shaft slip joint jolt in stopping and moving off issue. The dealer diagnosed it as rear brakes and he was charged for this but that made no difference and the jolt is still there and it's clearly a binding slip joint in the prop shaft as I diagnosed for him. The dealer want to charge him again for a service but I believe that, as this issue is down to a known manufacturing fault, it's a "fitness of purpose" rather than a wear and tear issue and Toyota need to fix it for free regardless of it being out of the three year warranty period and am prepared to pursue this with Consumer Affairs ACCC if necessary, especially as he was already charged for an ineffective fix.

Not sure what the status on this is now, pretty sure the newer builds don't have the issue anymore...

But my Hilux ( GUN126R Jan2016 Build, delivered March 2016) had the new tailshaft installed under warranty after about a year (I think).
It has been going perfectly since then, currently 82,000km on the clock.

I don't think they did a full recall on this but if you push hard enough I would think it fair that it be fixed @ no cost out of warranty, since it was a well known issue with the early builds. A bit like the DPF issue, which they have committed to support out of warranty. Good luck...

It was first registered in Cessnock NSW in January 2016 if that is what you are asking.

Its a known issue. I had my tailshaft replaced no charge by Newtown Toyota in welshpool.

Mine has a build date of Dec 2015. First rego March 2016

Melville Toyota are going to have look and charge us $165:00 per hour in diagnostic fees regardless of cause. Not totally happy about that bit especially as they say they will need the vehicle for the whole day. Noting, they said they pull the slip joint and lubricate and inspect it, as part of each service (I bet; even if it is prescribed in the service handbook) it would probably be cheaper to just pay $400 odd to get a service.

Took it to NewTown Toyota Instead. No issues with them and they could not be more friendly and helpful they are claiming a new propeller shaft from Toyota per TNF (Toyota Technical Newsflash to Dealers) Number 27/18 at no cost to my son. So if anyone else has an issue with a vehicle produced late 2015 early 2016 and can't get assistance from a dealer refer them to TNF 27/18.

It now has the new tail shaft installed an\d my son reports that it has never before driven so smoothly with not only no jolts on stopping and starting but smoother knockdown gear changes.

2018 Hilux Rogue tail shaft 'clunk'

Postby roels2384 on Sat, 19 Jun 2021 10:10 +0000

Hi,

I've been reading through the forums and it seems that the tailshaft making a clunking noise when starting to move or stopping is pretty common in the earlier 2015-2016 Hiluxes. I have a 2018 Hilux Rogue that just started making a clunking noise similar to what was described in those posts. I would've expected the issue was fixed by Toyota for the later models. Does anyone else have the issue for a 2018 Hilux? The car is also out of the standard 3-year warranty period as it was purchased in May 2018 :(
