Hi,

I dont have the service manual with me at the moment. What is the recommended km's for changing the timing chain on the 2.8 motor

I seem to recall it was 150,000km for the belt in the 3.0 motor but it is a belt.

My 2004 model 3 litre is 150K, 2.8 litre? Year model? variant?
I'd guess if you can't find the answer by doing a search of the forum, then maybe try a google search?

Mine is a 2017 Gen 8 (hence the section where posted).

Incase anyone is interested i got my service manual back today and went through the items on the service interval pages and timing chain replacement is not a maintenance activity.

I also note with some disappointment that a vehicle that is marketed as unbreakable only has a service log up to 200,000km

I am at 150,000km so only 5 services to go and then i guess i get to save money as no further servicing required. :?

I have done some googling on interval for the timing chain and can not find a reputable source for when to change. There are lots of keyboard warriors with an opinion but nothing definitive.

I look forward to hearing what you find.

Outside the dpf problems which are now largely resolved, the 1gd seems to be rather unbreakable. There was some timing chain related issues noted early on, maybe a search here might reveal the info you are after?

Try walking into the local dealership workshop and ask? My Hilux is a ... And I'd like to know if the timing belt is done at 100k or 150k. Cos I had an older model and it was done every 150k. I just want to get it right.

X2, try asking a dealer service department... Although I think if it were a time/kilometers based procedure I would expect it would be in the owners handbook and workshop manual, just as is the gen7 timing belt. ;)

I see no point in asking a dealership anything - they know less about their products then random internet keyboard warriors

Why wouldn't you continue with the same schedule? The warranty and service book does specify extended intervals E.g. coolant replacement every additional 48 months / 80,00km after the initial change at 160,000km.

I had timing chain issues with mine and it was fixed at 45K kms and now I am at 120k kms and the motor is still going fine. I thought the timing chain was something that didn't need replacing unlike the belt in the previous 3.0 ltr motor

Yes, aware of the timing chain noise in the early 1gd engines. The timing chain will stretch and the guides will wear... when to replace these items after 200,000kms is the question.
