1GD-FTV Excessive Turbocharger Whine

Postby CamboT on Mon, 06 Jul 2020 1:26 +0000

Excessive turbocharger whine noise under light load and at idle.
Can replicate by revving very lightly in neutral.

On some turbos, a misalignment during assembly caused an imballance which in turn causes a whining noise.

Turbo ID 21 B/P serial number 00284524
Turbo ID 22: B/P serial number 00231878

Remedy : replace turbocharger assembly

ok , so is the same issue that causes the bent fins? makes sense if the spinning parts were not aligned at factory

Possibly...
Although bent fins is normally caused by ingesting foreign objects or dirt.
Compressor and/or turbine wheels can touch the housings if there's an imbalance severe enough though.

Bulletin is from 2016 so early in the GUN range.
Turbo manufacture dates pretty small too.
Just had to do a few through work recently so thought it would worth a mention here

Thanks CamboT - that is useful information.

A slightly OT question - whats your experience with the reports of engine dusting - is user error e.g. incorrect fitment of the filter, non-genuine parts or what I've seen on a few influencer channels... travelling in a dusty convoy... ... or is it a genuine airbox design problem?
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

Seems to be more of an Aussie issue. We haven't had issues to your extent over here.
Decent snorkel and filter systems seem to be all good here.
When in convoy with a number of vehicles it pays to sit back a fair way so as not to sit in the thick of the dust kicked up.
But then we don't have that bloody terrible red bulldust talc powder you guys do. That shit gets in everywhere!! Not sure of a cure for that sorry lol
