Timing Chains

Postby CamboT on Tue, 02 Jun 2020 1:39 +0000

New "field fixes" for GD engines in Hilux and Prado's come out in NZ.
Timing chain tenioners in the Prado's, and manufacturing fault in gear drive pulleys in Hilux up to mid 2017.

Hilux issue is manufacturing tool was worn and made the gear drive pulleys incorrectly.
Timing chains get quite rattlely as a telltale sign.

Prado tensioner superceded parts is to fix a chain rattle type noise.

Both very big jobs to do. 15.9+ hrs lab

CamboT - I have a 2016 Hilux and just this week went in for the new DPF housing repalcement. During the same visit i asked Toyota to look into the time chain noise and they agreed it needed to be replaced. My question to you is will they use this new Bulletin you speak of or what parts will be use instead.

Not sure...possibly...possibly not...
There are a couple different bulletins regarding the TC rattle.
The earlier bulletin I mentioned in the OP is pretty much a full replacement of all the timing gear. So not sure what this newer bulletin covers in regards to specific build range. It just mentions Post 2017.
So your 2016 Hilux most likely be covered by the previous bulletin.

CamboT

I have a MID 2015 GUN126r.....yes one of the first...

Just hit 100,000km with no timing chain rattle....

Is timing chain noise inevitable eventually?
Would i have heard anything by now?
Are they all effected?

Timing Chain rattle

Postby Adventure on Mon, 31 Oct 2022 8:51 +0000

Hi all.
Apologies for new Post but previous posts on this topic are some years old...

My 2015 2.8Lit Hilux with 143,00Kms on the clock has been diagnosed with Timing chain rattle on start-up.. More common problem than some people would believe and perhaps a future class action pending.!!!

Yota have agreed to cover under extended warranty and now have the parts in the country (after an 8 week wait).
I have read quite a few posts on the subject and I am looking at the engine specs provided by CamboT and Hiluxxury.. Thanks Guys

I see that the balancing shafts, mounted below the crank were introduced into Prado in early 2015 then later in the luxxes and I’m assuming that it’s because of this that the engine needs to be removed for proper replacement of all chains, (3 in total).

My Dealer has quoted 1 day to do the job ??…so I’m thinking that either I don’t have the Type 20 variant, or Yota don’t know what the hell they’re doing !!!

How can I tell if I have the type 20 variant ?? and if I do, am I correct in assuming that the repair will be “engine out”

Quote from Toyota GD series diesel engines

“All 1GD for Prado and Hiace are equipped with balance shafts driven by chain from crankshaft. Unlike KD, balancers located in a separate case under block. For the Hilux family, balancers were not used for type'15, but appeared for type'20.”

Thanks in advance :D :D

You have already displayed a greater knowledge of the situation than I have, however if you're after information specific to your engine then maybe do a Google (or even Toyota) search on your engine number? Just a thought

The toyota reccommended method ( and what the dealer will backcharge them for ) is an engine out procedure. I believe this is to ensure the sump can be correctly sealed at the spot where it joins the timing chain cover.
I have read that some dealers can do it with the engine in but i dont know which method is actually better.

mine was off the road for just under 3 days for the job , and from memory the parts were about $3000 and the labour was about the same.

yours will not be a type 20 , being a 15 model. Maybe its just the way the kit comes nowadays , to cover all variants of the engine , not sure.

Thanks "Rob" and "numberplate"...

Engine number google search didn't reveal anything...

So roughly what month and year did the Type 20 ( and presumably , the balance shafts) engines appear??

The issue for me is that if Yota recommend 3 days to get to the bottom end properly, what shortcuts are these guys doing to shorten the time frame?... and what implications are there for the quality of the job ??
Will I expect oil leaks ?? Will I get all three chains replaced??

Does anyone have access to the two Timing Chain Rattle TSB's that Yota have released on the topic. I think the latest one was recent ( maybe late last year) ???
Lots of unknowns which worries me a little...

it just means the variant of that engine which was released in 2020. The 1GD was originally designed in 2008 but released in 2015.
Doesnt always make sense to us because many technical Japanese documents were originally not written in English , so its just how its described during translation.

Thanks for that. So a "type 17" would be a 2017 model or was is pre 20 then 20 with the motor update.
Reason I'm asking is I'm selling my n70 sr5 and looking to buy a n80 only to get the bigger tow rating other wise happy with the n70.
My budget has me looking around 2015 - 2018 dual cabs around 100k.
Is there a certain year or month the chains were updated or have less issues?
Is it any year will need the chain done around 150k mark?
Was warranty work done on the earlier ones so maybe a early one could now have less issues ?
Thanks

Edit having a look on Toyotadiy it shows a slightly different part number for the chain sub assembly between the 2016 and 2022 hilux.
