Dpf removal tips

G'day all.
Had the dpf turned off yesterday as part of a tune & will be replacing the dpf with a pipe during the week. Car is parked up now waiting for the pipe to arrive.
For those that have pulled the dpf themselves, do you have any tips on the easiest way to get it out? Have heard about disconnecting the steering rod gives room to pull it out from the top.
Thanks
Silverfox

Hi mate,

It’s meant to be pretty hard. I haven’t done t myself but my tuner said his crew hate doing hem cause they’re a royal PITA. If you needs tips you might want to reconsider doing it yourself...

Good luck either way.

Make sure you keep everything to put it all back in as I've heard rumours they are going to be included in pink slip inspections at some stage. So once the car becomes of that age where it requires annual inspections it may become an issue.

Got it out, but it was a real pain in the arse as suggested. Biggest problem was actually getting it out of the engine bay. Ended up disconnecting the steering shaft & undoing the drivers side engine mount & lifted the right side of the motor to give clearance.
Kept the dpf for the future just in case & have put a delete pipe in for now. Will be looking to get a clapted out dpf that i can gut then put in so at least it looks like it is standard.

Let us know how much better it runs and your new fuel consumption once you get going. Cheers

Silverfox did you had to do any ECU changes?
One would think if you just take DPF out without reprograming ECU, the car would throw fault codes etc.

Regards,

Yes, the dpf was effectively removed from the electronics as part of the tune.
I wasn't after a race car, just more power & torque for towing so the tuner only put in he's stage 1 tune. The car has more exhaust sound now & has improved the economy by about 1.5L/100 K on my mix of hilly highway & freeway. It also feels a lot livelier than before. When accelerating to get onto a freeway, it actually does accelerate now & not just make more noise.
I haven't put the camper on to test the towing yet but I'm pretty happy so far.

I had my DPF removed a while ago now and was the best decision I have made. I also got a 3in exhaust, ECU remap and a torque convertor lockup kit. Towing my camper around the 2.2t mark and a loaded ute i average 12l per 100ks with it locked in 5th. The torque convertor lockup saves it from chopping and changing gears like its going out of fashion

Just removed my 3 DPF's and it wasn't really that bad - no need to disconnect steering rods etc. Just a case of correctly rotating and lifting up to remove from engine bay. Got remap and custom 3" stainless too and its made a world of difference on the trucks performance. Will post some pics later once I refresh my memory on how to do it.

Well after two DPF replacements and 100000k's of white clouds Ive had enough. Got the DPF removed last week. Manta 3in exhaust and custom ecu remap. From 127hp to 174hp and 318Nm to 478Nm. Also had to upgrade the clutch to a NPC. Runs like a dream now, wish I did it earlier.

True, only a matter of time. Problem is though, all this new technology has been forced through without getting it to work properly. It's not just Toyota who has this problem so why can't these manufacturers get real and make it work instead of using the poor old consumer as a crash test dummy! Imagine if the aircraft manufacturers tried their new technology on poor unsuspecting passengers! No wait, isn't that what they did with the new passenger aircraft that crash 3minutes after takeoff when the computer has a hissy-fit?
I guess that's why we have lawyers and class-action.

Well I’m prepared to take that risk TOYZX. I was sick of constantly battling with Toyota about smoke and poor fuel economy, for them to tell me every time “we’ve done a regen it should be good now” I now get 1000ks instead of 750 from a tank with a sh#t load more power. Good luck finding me!

I had heard rumours through the grapevine that the dpf will eventually become part of the annual pink slip inspection in NSW, so as these 2016 models get to 5 years old it'll start rearing its head I guess. They'll up the cost of a pink slip too to cover it! Not sure if this will just be a visual check or not but I guess that is all they could expect a mechanic to do. Unless the EPA themselves want to start checking them at rego time?
