Rear main seal

Hi everyone first post been a stalker a for while though
Just wondering if any of the experts could help me can the rear main seal be put in to deep ?

It went in too far? It should be flush with the housing to ensure it is straight on the shaft.

There were groves in the cam shaft from the old seal so pushed it in a bit further but went a bit further than I wanted to .
Does the seal carrier have a retainer to stop it going to far ?

Camshaft? A rear main (bearing) is what holds the crank at the flywheel end.

From memory (which is bad at the best of times), it doesn't. It's common practice to place the new seal where the old one was. Apply some oil around the crankshaft-seal face so it doesn't have its first few turns dry.

So the seal failed not looking forward to pulling it all apart again
So my next question. Is it very hard to remove the seal keeper so I can install it on a flat surface in the shed ?

Its easy enough to put in without pulling the keeper off. I can't remember doing when I replaced mine

Make sure ya use a genuine seal!
