Over confident crossing river...

Postby Leroyangus on Mon, 18 Dec 2017 1:47 +0000

Hey everyone,

Last weekend went on a over night trip down a river bed here in Hawkes bay NZ in my 2016 lux.
Long story short after crossing a relatively deep hole (bow wave over bonnet), engine lost power and had white smoke like a steam train out exhaust.
Ute was optioned with a snorkel from dealership and dont worry, no water went near the top of the snorkel.
Parked up and checked air filter.. absolutely saturated. Pulled inner wheel well guard off to find the pipe between snorkel and airbox half hanging out
The bolt that holds the connecting pipe in place was tight. So someone hasn't done their job properly.
Dried out airfilter as best i could and fitted pipes together to get me home the next morning.
I will be taking ute into Toyota as soon as I can. As this is still under warranty what will Toyota likely do? I have pictures of snorkel and gap between pipes and a f@$#*d air filter to show them

Thanks for any advice

My guess is they will tell you it’s a cool air intake not a snorkel, warranty doesn’t cover water crossings more than couple of hundred mm, you may have dislodged the pipe during excessively rough driving, and then they’ll use this ‘mistreatment’ as an excuse for any other problem you have in the future.

So Toyota ended up covering half the bill. Which is better than nothing! Glued up snorkel pipes and we are away again. Cheers

Good outcome. What was replaced?

Bouncing up creekbeds over there looks like it would be fairly tough on vehicles.

Air filter and rear diff oil. Everything else looked fine. Also 5th injector under warranty but that's another thread.

Yeah sure can be mate. Like anything though just have to find the best line.
