Great thread, thanks for putting us on to this. It does help to understand the complexity of the modern diesel engine. Also may quieten the naysayers as this article doesn't say NO to chips, but it does explain how they work and the limitations. I think many come unstuck when they wind their chip to the max settings without knowing what they are doing! Moderate gains are possible without destroying your engine.
Also, whether you have a chip or not it is essential to have an egt probe and keep your eyes on the temps as the combustion chamber temps are not so readily available. I have my chip and egt probe set to 520c where it cuts the chip but even if the chip is switched off I have seen 560c plus with the OEM tune. Back it off when they get too high! It surprised me how quickly the temps came down when I backed off the throttle slightly.
