Hi all,

It is possible to initiate a manual DPF burn using basic OBD2 tools.

Note that we haven't tried this on a hilux yet, but given that it works on Fortuner and Prado, I'd give it a 99.99% chance.

Brief instructions:

To manually start a DPF burn:
- In the android Torque application a custom button can be created for this command containing the OBD command data 30 29 06 01 01
- In the ScanGauge a custom command/message can be added containing 3029060101

DPF Level Guage:

You can create a guage for SG2 or Torque to display the DPF accumulation level just as a workshop scan tool does.
The details for SG2 are:

TXD: 07E02138
RXF: 032104780000
RXD: 4008
MTH: 000200010000
NAME: DPA (or whatever)

For Torque, I believe you can set the PID to 2138, and the equation to J*2. That's it.

Nice one! Just tried it then with a ScanGuage2 entering via Custom Commands and off it went. RPM increased to 2000 RPM and message on the dash said it was doing a manual regen. Didn't wait for it to finish, just tried it out.

So if you start a burn manually, can you stop it?

switch off the engine , the manually activated burn stops.
the auto burns will keep trying till its completed

So how complicated is it to just get rid of the DPF? Do exhaust manufacturers like Beaudesert have a fix?
(Hint: I'm pretty obviously not technically minded, but don't want to see the pride and joy go up in flames in the spinifex, as my mates Prado did on our Canning trip earlier this year)'.

I've updated my original fortuner forum post (linked in the first post) with details for creating a DPF % gauge for SG2 / Torque to display (hopefully!) the same values as commercial scan tools.

When you mention torque, do you mean the torque obd app that can be purchased on the Android app store? Is it possible to start a burn off using the app? If so how do you do it?

Thanks Dave, i created a gauge for SG2 to display the DPF accumulation level. Works a treat. 8% this morning 12% tonight.

I have a friend who has access to some workshop scan tools (not sure exactly which tool it was, not a toyota specific one), and equipment to inspect the CAN bus traffic. Its a fairly straightforward process, particularly if the packets of interest adhere to the regular OBD2 standard as these do (albeit with a custom 'mode' and PID).

I'm not interested in spending too much time trying to suck all the details out of these tools. I'm not a mechanic, and I'm not really sure which values are useful anyway. However if someone more knowledgeable than me who is familiar with these tools (e.g. techstream) can suggest specific values that are useful for regular owners to monitor in order to care for their engine, I'll see what I can do. For more complex things, I suggest getting a hold of techstream or another professional scan tool.

Nice work with the sg2.
Watched my gauge yesterday while driving to work. The "dpa" got to 74 & then the car started a burn that went for 25 min & finished up at a reading of 8.
From this, I'm thinking that the car doesn't use the accumulation reading as a trigger to do a burn, & may still be doing them based on distance or maybe engine hours.
On a side note, those that claim doing a burn doesn't affect fuel economy are kidding themselves. Watched the fuel economy while the burn was on & it easily increased the instantaneous reading by 0.5 l/100k.

I tend to agree. Ok granted I've only owned the SR5 for a 5 weeks now but I noticed a slightly higher idle and the smell of a burn off after driving for 20-25 mins on the F6/Princes motorway to Wollongong a few days back.

I haven't driven much since adding 'DPA' to the SG2, so I've only just had the first burn. It was at .... exactly 100%! My co-conspirator ExNissan from pradopoint also had the first burn occur at exactly 100%. Both were doing urban driving, unfortunately I wasn't counting k's, but I think it was a little less than 300.

So I'm thinking perhaps its 100% *or* 300klms, whichever comes first.
For typical mixed driving, its likely that 300klms is the magic number for reaching approx 100% anyway.

Not sure if anyone else has tried on the 2gdftv workmate hilux, but it does work and initiates a burn, just for anyone who's curious!

good to hear , the 2GD is just a smaller version of the 1GD so i guess a lot of the software will be common
