1kd Turbo fluctuations PLEASE HELP!

Postby frostyy on Tue, 25 Apr 2017 9:04 +0000

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone could offer any insight into my issue. I have a 2006 hilux (with egr cooler). The car now has 195xxx klms on it. The previous engine died at around 180xxx and I have replaced it with a 2008 model engine but used my existing turbo did all the work with me and a mate. Since installing the engine I have noticed a slight whine coming from the turbo at around 5 psi ( in cab boost gauge) and when this noise can be heard 50% of the time the boost will fluctuate from 5-10 psi it goes up and down about 5 times without me moving my foot on the throttle. It does it when cold or hot high speed or low speed. It seems to be triggered by a sudden increase of boost. The car has no engine codes and no boost leaks from what I can see. We noticed a small leak on the intake manifold a little while back but have now resealed that and is no longer leaking however boost fluctuations are still there. I am aware that these are a variable vein turbo and I know that the computer controls the boost I have replaced my stepper motor on my turbo but issue still remains. I believe something is telling the turbo to go up and down the boost but where it is getting this signal I cannot figure out.

Cheers blokes, frostyy.

Try cleaning your map sensor filter and get the sensor checked. It might be playing up giving the computer false boost readings.

Did u have boost gauge before engine swap, to know if it was present before. My gauge gives off some fluctuating readings under light and medium throttle but stays steady on WOT. I think there's a similar thread here on this topic

@ constant throttle the vanes on the turbo do fluctuate to maintain the rev/power balance. Whine could be normal as the turbo increasing boost. Mine whistles around 2 to 4k rpm under acceleration and as you back off the tone changes. Remember the turbo has no waste gate so the vanes are used to compensate to keep the ecu satisfied.
What max boost you seeing?
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Hey guys thanks for the replys. It has been mentioned before that it maybe the boost gauge issue itself but having felt the surgin of power when the boost goes up and down has led me to believe that it isn't that. The turbo noise that I am hearing in my opinion is not a noise that is normal. Is not really a whistle, but a whine similar sound of an alternator with bad bearings (it's not that though haha) also as I said the boost will normally only fluctuate on flat ground at a cruising speed with throttle held in the same position. It won't do it at WOT and if I give it a bit more juice whilst it's doing it it stops doing it. Max psi I'm seeing is around 14-15

Any luck finding where this noise was coming from? After I did an intake manifold clean and replaced the injectors, my truck is now making the same noise as frostyy has explained. No noise before work was done, so thinking it could be one of the vacuum lines or something left disconnected. Any ideas anyone?

Found the issue with my truck. I had left the 3 nuts that bolts the egr elbow to the intake manifold. Only had them finger tight. Oops...
Tightened them up, and now going great.
