I've been towing a few trailers around lately with a payload of around a ton and taking into account that once it's removed the ute feels more spirited to drive for a few days afterwards before settling into it's "normal" driving.
I suspect that the extra effort required by the engine for towing has been clearing the DPF which is a good thing.
Would I be correct in thinking this?

Silversp, your probably right about the harder working motor helping to clear the dpf.
I noticed once while towing my camper up a big hill that the egt got very high & the dpf level was dropping. This was towing about 1500kg up a long hill & was seen via a scanguage.

Maybe so but also remember if you have auto it 'learns' to cope with extra load and driving style.

+1 with a continually running DPF regen and clouds of white smoke. Has been going for a few hundred km's - combined city/highway. Before it'd cycle every 300-400km for short periods. Definitely abnormal. Rang Toyota service - they acknowledges DPF issues exist but so long as no warning lights she'll be right mate, apparently. Goes in to shop tomorrow.

Hooked up the OBDII to torque and the DPF is showing 10-16% full, with no consistent change over time. Most concerned about the EGT being 600-750 degrees continuously when in its stuck regen mode. Add white smoke and global warming = my fault. Already copped a mouthful from ecowarrior soccer mums during the school dropoff.

New DPF on the way

After 450000 k”s the dpf constantly burns blowing plumes of smoke and fuel economy has drastically got worse. Toyota said it was 185% full and have ordered me a new one under warranty.. hopefully the next one lasts a bit longer!

450000 ks is a pretty damn impressive lifespan .... assume you mean 45000 though :D

Update: took it in for the service and no surprise the DPF was f...d and needed replacement. The dealer had a bunch of spares so no waiting around for parts. They've apparently been seeing heaps of these and they are being very vocal to Toyota HQ about getting it sorted.

The guy on the Toyota front desk actually recommended to me doing a DPF delete...

I suspect there will be a lot of deletes getting done once warranty has finished.

Had my 40k service a week ago and they did an program update for the DPF. 2016 Model.

After the update my car now tells me when it is doing an DPF regeneration (on the dash). It also appeared to take less time to do the burn than before.

Interesting, at least they're continually working on it. Not ideal for the people that have had issues but better than being fobbed off like some of the other brands.

Did they mention any service bulletin number for the ECU update?
SR5 or SR dash?

Interesting about the light. I had mine serviced 3 weeks or so ago at Toyota but haven’t seen a light nor told about it and I’ve done just over 2000km so I would have expected some regen during that time period.

The recall only came out the week I had mine serviced.

It's not.a light that comes on. It's a written message that comes up in the info screen between the speedo and rpm dials.

Interesting about the mention of the light. Well for anyone that is interested I did a write up about that some time ago if you do a search you will find it, & exactly how to go about installing one, just remember to use a light emitting diode as indicator & must not be a filament globe. Cheers.

My 2018 got updated monday.
Did 600ks no notice on the dash for me.
Considering they reflashed the computer all my settings like no seatbelt alarm and others remained the same. Not back to the default.

ECU/DPF Recall

Hi Team,

Just listed my increased DPF burns, higher fuel economy and soot in tailpipe issues to the local dealer.

Promptly got a phone call 10min after I logged the service request on their website.

They have explained that my vehicle (Jan 2017 SR 2.8) is under a recall (that 'R' word) that is very recent and I wouldn't have heard anything from Toyota yet. The recall is regarding the ECU and DPF (she alluded to reprogramming) but didn't get more info than that.

Dropping it off on Thursday to have them do the work - apparently it takes 1.5 - 2hrs.

Will let you guys know how I go!

Tones.

So is it correct that if the dpf is working correctly, the exhaust tip should not be black?
